Firefighters with Metter Fire Rescue have began annual fire hydrant testing throughout the City of Metter.

This yearly testing helps ensure hydrants are operating properly and ready when needed during emergencies. During this process, residents may notice water flowing from hydrants or temporary discoloration in water.

During the month of April, Metter Fire Rescue responded to a total of 93 incidents across the City of Metter and Candler County.

This total includes 5 mutual aid responses assisting neighboring communities with wildfire incidents and emergency operations.

Our firefighters responded to a wide variety of emergencies including:

Yesterday, Metter Fire Rescue was dispatched to a reported structure fire on Boston St. Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from the residence and quickly worked to extinguish the fire.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported during this incident.

We would like to thank the City of Metter Public Works, Metter Police Department , and Candler County EMS for their assistance and support on scene.

Great teamwork by all agencies involved to help keep our community safe.

The Candler County burn ban has officially been lifted, and now is probably a good time to talk about what is okay to burn โ€” and what is absolutely not okay to burn.

Only natural vegetation and untreated natural materials are allowed to be burned. That includes things like:
๐Ÿ‚ Leaves
๐ŸŒฟ Limbs and brush
๐Ÿชต Untreated wood and yard debris

What is NOT legal to burn:
๐Ÿšซ Household garbage
๐Ÿšซ Tires
๐Ÿšซ Plastics
๐Ÿšซ Furniture
๐Ÿšซ Painted or treated wood
๐Ÿšซ Construction materials
๐Ÿšซ Chemicals or hazardous materials

Before you burn, you still need a burn permit.
โ€ข If you live in Candler County outside the city limits, permits are issued through the Georgia Forestry Commission.
โ€ข If you live inside the City of Metter, you must contact Metter Fire Rescue before burning.

Just because the burn ban is lifted does NOT mean conditions are always safe. Avoid burning on Red Flag Days, during windy conditions, or when humidity is extremely low. Weather conditions can change quickly, and one small fire can spread fast.

Before lighting anything:
โœ” Watch the weather
โœ” Keep water or tools nearby
โœ” Never leave a fire unattended
โœ” Have a plan if the fire starts to spread

Conditions across our community are still extremely dry, and the risk for fires to spread quickly remains high. We are asking everyone to please be patient and continue helping us keep our community safe.

We want to remind everyone that we are still under a burn ban across our area.

Over the past several days, crews have responded to multiple fires.With conditions remaining dry and unpredictable, it does not take much for a small fire to get out of control.

๐Ÿšซ No outdoor burning of any kind is allowed at this time. This includes burn piles, yard debris, campfires, and any open flames.

Even something as simple as a spark, cigarette, or hot equipment can start a fire that spreads quickly.

Our goal is simpleโ€”keep our community safe and prevent unnecessary emergencies.

Today, weโ€™re sharing a look at what our firefighters encountered on the front lines while assisting in Brantley County Yesterday.

These photos show just how fast conditions can change and how intense these fires can become. Dry conditions, wind, and heavy fuels continue to create a dangerous environment across our region.

This is also a reminder that the statewide burn ban remains in effect. There should be no outdoor burning of any kind right now.
It doesnโ€™t take much โ€” one spark can quickly turn into something like what you see in these images.

We ask everyone to do their part:
โ€ข No outdoor burning
โ€ข Avoid parking in tall grass
โ€ข Donโ€™t discard ci******es on the ground
โ€ข Be mindful of anything that could create a spark

Please continue to keep all crews and the affected communities in your thoughts as operations continue.
