The Borough of Metuchen is located 25 miles southwest of Manhattan and 2 miles west of where the New Jersey Turnpike intersects with the Garden State Parkway. Its southern boundary is defined by Interstate 287 where that interstate changes into Route 440 and continues eastward into Staten Island becoming the West Shore Expressway. The Borough is conveniently served by the New Jersey Transit Northe

ast Corridor Line from New York to Trenton with a stop at Main Street in the Borough's downtown. This station also serves as a connection point for many local New Jersey Transit bus routes with connections to Fords, Plainfield, Perth Amboy, Raritan, Piscataway and much of Edison.

For years, residents have complained about the neglected space beneath the Grove Avenue railroad bridge. The sidewalks were deteriorated, the railings rusted and broken, and the lighting poor along a heavily traveled route for pedestrians and vehicles.

Because the property is owned by Amtrak, fixing it required coordination well beyond the Borough. These kinds of projects can take time and persistence, and after working through a series of bureaucratic obstacles, this summer we were able to use a NJ Department of Transportation Transit Village grant to make major improvements to the sidewalks, railings and lighting.

I think it’s safe to say this reclaimed underpass looks so much better, is safer, and is yet another example of how we’re tackling infrastructure throughout Metuchen by working across levels of government and finding outside funding to get long-needed improvements done.

Everbridge provides a portal where residents can manage their emergency notifications and alert preferences. Users receive immediate notifications about local threats such as severe weather, road closures, and police activity. DPW information will also be shared such as when garbage days are rescheduled.
It is easy to opt in or out of alerts and you have full control over what personal information is shared with the organization sending the alert.

The Metuchen Arts Council will present its final 2026 summer concert on Wednesday, August 26 at 6:00 pm at The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park, next to the Metuchen Library.
