Metuchen Fire Company

Metuchen Fire Company We are the non-profit organization of firefighters, who provide fire protection and rescue services via the Metuchen Fire Department.

We are the members of the "Metuchen Volunteer Fire Company". Our all-volunteer non-profit organization is made up of your neighbors and friends. Members give their time to operate the "Metuchen Fire Department". The Fire Company does not represent the Borough of Metuchen. Given that 75% of NJ fire departments are volunteer, we are part of the American tradition of dedicating ourselves to serving o

ur community and ensuring that when someone needs help, the call is answered. Intensive training, modern equipment and over 120 years of tradition come together to provide the best protection possible, allowing all our families to sleep soundly at night. 16 dedicated Fire Company members spent 6+ hours of their Sunday to help control this fire that could have quickly spread. Thank you to Edison FD, East Brunswick FD, Middlesex FD, Metuchen EMS, Metuchen Police Department, Hackensack Meridian Medics, and Scott's Towing and Recovery for their support on the Metuchen side of the scene.

A couple of important updates on the Route 287 fire:

The southbound lanes of Route 287 should reopen within minutes. The northbound lanes, however, will remain closed as the investigation continues.

We have been working closely with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Middlesex County Hazmat officials to track any fuel runoff from the incident, and none of it has entered Metuchen. Any affected runoff areas are already being addressed by DEP crews, and officials do not expect any significant environmental impact.

I am also feeling incredibly grateful to the members of the Metuchen Fire Department. Shortly after flames spread to trees along Route 287 adjacent to the accident scene, our firefighters positioned themselves near the business area at the end of High Street and successfully prevented the fire from spreading further toward Metuchen. I truly cannot overstate how important that effort was in preventing an already very serious situation from becoming even worse for our community.

Thank you to all of the firefighters, police officers, EMS crews, OEM personnel, DEP and hazmat teams, and all of the mutual aid responders who continue to work this incident.

๐Ÿ”ฅ This weekโ€™s Fire Company training focused on Wildland Firefighting techniques, equipment and safety. The unseasonably warm weather has accelerated the Spring Brush Fire Season which includes the threat of mulch fires. Twenty of our members, including our three new Junior Firefighter Recruits trained for several hours along a section of railroad tracks where weโ€™ve had brush fires in the past.

Choosing the the best tools for the job, stretching hose lines deep into vegetated areas, learning to navigate cluttered & slippery embankments, establishing water shuttle operations and maintaining a safe work environment are all part of the focus. No two fires are ever the same, so the more you train, the better prepared youโ€™ll be when the unexpected arrives.

It was a good night, hotter than people are use to this time of year, but we donโ€™t get to choose when & where weโ€™re called to action. Food ends the night, so after the equipment was packed, the trucks were fueled and everyone cleaned up, we fed the troops. It was a late night, but good training is always worth the time and energy.

Want to make a difference in your community? Reach out and we can tell you what it takes to Join Our Team. ๐Ÿš’๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿš’๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿš’

Our most recent weekly training session focused on Motor Vehicle Extrication (MVX) techniques. Using hydraulic, battery & pneumatic driven tools to remove the vehicle from around the entrapped victim.

On this occasion, we were aided by the very generous donation of a car by the Karwowski Family here in Metuchen. Donations like this and when developers offer us the opportunity to train in buildings slated for demolition provided the most realistic hands-on training anyone could ask for. Some family members even found the time to come out and watch (with safety precautions) their car become part of what prepares our firefighters for the next challenge they may face.

We accept donations of all types of motor vehicles for training purposes. There wonโ€™t be much left when weโ€™re done with it, but the techniques learned and practiced may save someoneโ€™s life in the future.

Weโ€™re also looking for new members to join the team. Want to serve the community? Want to learn things and go places (into burning buildings) that other people can only imagine? Reach out for more info and weโ€™ll be happy tell you more about who we are and what we do.

๐Ÿ”ฅEarly this morning, our members responded to a reported structure fire in Redfield Village. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Apartment buildings always present unique challenges, and the addition of a snowy landscape heavily impacted operations during this incident. Our crews had to navigate large fire engines through tight spaces packed with snow mounds and parked cars to get close to the building, locate hydrants cleared of ice, and stretch long attack lines through snow and up ice-covered stairs.

Fortunately, our teams were able to quickly locate the attic fire and get it knocked down.

We would like to thank our local partners (Metuchen Police Department and Metuchen EMS) and the many Mutual Aid crews (South Plainfield Volunteer Fire Department, Edison, Iselin 9, Iselin 11, South Amboy, Sayreville, and Middlesex County) who helped make this incident manageable.

Ten residents were displaced, and Borough officials are currently working to assist them.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Fire Hydrant Dig-Out ๐Ÿ”ฅ
Be a Hero & Help Save Lives

There are nearly 300 Fire Hydrants in Metuchen. Every one of them needs to be dug out of the snow after every storm. Your Metuchen Volunteer Firefighters have been standing by in the Station all day, working to keep the doors clear and ready to respond to your emergencies. We do not have the manpower to shovel out 300 fire hydrants.

Every home & business owner should know where the closest fire hydrants is because it will be needed if YOU have a fire. They arenโ€™t โ€œsomebodyโ€™sโ€ responsibility to clear, theyโ€™re EVERYONEโ€™S responsibility.

IMPORTANT! - When clearing a Fire Hydrant, we need a path from the Hydrant to the street, not to the sidewalk.

โœ… Locate the Fire Hydrant closest to your home of business

โœ… Clear snow away from the Hydrant with a path to the Street

โœ… If you pay someone to remove your snow, tell them the Fire Hydrant is included.

This is a serious public safety issue and we thank everyone who has pitched to help.

PLEASE CLEAR SNOW & ICE AWAY FROM ALL FIRE HYDRANTS!
