I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Alan Grossman. Over my years on Council, I got to know Alan through our work together on the Planning Board and the Metuchen Democratic Committee. He was always prepared, always thoughtful, and never needed the spotlight. Just quietly devoted to this community he loved.

My heart goes out to his family. He will be greatly missed.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of former Councilman and current Planning Board Member Alan Grossman this weekend.

Alan was one of the kindest, most decent, and most dedicated people I have had the privilege to know in public life. He was a quiet force in our community whose loyalty, generosity, and steady commitment to Metuchen touched so many people over the years.

Alan devoted countless hours to public service and community involvement. He served two terms on Borough Council and was one of the longest serving members of the Metuchen Planning Board and a member of the History Advisory Committee. He also held leadership roles with the Metuchen Educational Foundation and the Metuchen Borough Improvement League, always working to strengthen the community he loved.

Beyond his official roles, Alan embodied the spirit of volunteerism that makes Metuchen special. He gave so much of himself to others with humility, warmth, and a genuine commitment to the community he loved.

Scouting was also central to Alan’s life. An Eagle Scout himself, he spent more than five decades mentoring young people and serving the scouting community in countless leadership roles. Just last week, Alan was awarded the Silver Antelope Award, one of Scouting’s highest national honors, recognizing his extraordinary character, leadership, and lifetime of service to others.

Our thoughts are with Alan’s family, loved ones, and the many people whose lives he impacted through his friendship and service.

Mourning bunting will be hung at Borough Hall in Alan’s honor as a tribute to a man who gave so much to Metuchen.

Yesterday New Jersey chose to build trust over sowing fear in our shared public spaces. Our LD 18 representatives voted in favor of three landmark bills that were signed by Gov Sherrill, putting the protection of immigrant communities and civil rights into law.

- The first law safeguards privacy by barring state agencies from sharing a person’s immigration status, except when required by law or a judicial warrant.

- The second law codifies the Attorney General’s policy that limits how much state and local law enforcement must cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

- The third law prohibits law enforcement officers from covering their faces and requires them to clearly identify themselves before making an arrest.

This victory belongs to the advocates, organizers, and immigrant communities who kept pushing until our state stepped up.

SUPREME COURT BLOCKS TRUMP TARIFF TAX ON OUR SMALL BUSINESSES

Folks, remember when I warned back in August about Trump’s executive order killing the de minimis exemption? That move axed duty-free shipments under $800 starting August 29th, slamming our Main Street entrepreneurs with “big beautiful taxes” on everyday imports.

Today the Supreme Court ruled it unlawful under IEEPA. The $800 threshold is restored, easing the hit on local artisans, crafters, restaurants, and shops who faced $80-$200 extra per package, doubled costs on $50 buys, and 15-25% shipment drops.

In my role on the Council, I speak to our small business owners all the time. Higher overhead and tight margins were squeezing them hard, so this will be a welcome relief.

The 2027 phase-out is still coming, but this is a real and important win. If you want to protect small businesses from the next wave of Trump tariffs, add this to the long list of reasons to elect Democrats in the midterms who will actually stand up for Main Street instead of piling on more costs.

In the meantime, keep showing up for our local businesses: choose downtown first, recommend your favorite shops and restaurants to friends, and make sure your vote and your dollars both reflect the community you want to live in.

Metuchen neighbors, our collective consciousness woke up when we saw Sener and Jennifer needed us. Plain and simple, we cared deeply and showed up for them.

Tonight he's home. That's a huge win that deserves celebration. Hope restored for them, and a reminder that persistence pays off.

Don't forget what brought us here. Don't stop now. Keep caring for each other right here at home, and for families everywhere across this country facing the same fight. That's who we are.

This photo says more than words ever could.

I just got off the phone with our neighbor Sener Kalkan and his wife, Jennifer Poandl. After 67 long and painful days in Delaney Hall, Sener is finally home in Metuchen, back where he belongs.

When Sener was detained, our community made a simple promise: we would not rest until he was home. And we kept it.

Residents spoke up. Neighbors showed up. Community members rallied, made calls, sent emails, and reached out to our federal representatives. We pulled every appropriate lever available to us on behalf of our neighbor. This moment at their home tonight is the result of that collective effort.

This is an incredible outcome, and one we should acknowledge with pride. But it also reminds us of something harder. We have learned that the cases that receive the most attention are often the ones that move, while thousands of others remain unseen. There are so many families still waiting for a moment like this.

My hope is that what Metuchen did here inspires others to speak up when something is plainly unjust. To say, clearly and without hesitation: this is not fair. And to stand together until dignity and due process prevail.

Welcome home, Sener. Metuchen is so glad you’re back.
