Welcome to September. Wow, this year has really flown by so far. Hunger Winter by Rob Currie is the staff recommendation for September and is suggested by Brenda Gower, Farber Branch Library Manager. Please read on for her review.

Hunger Winter takes place in late 1944 in the Netherlands. The N***s are expanding their empire, and the Allies are making headway, as well as the Resistance. The main character is Dirk who finds himself, at 13-years-old, solely responsible for his six-year old sister. His mother has passed away and his dad is a leader of the Resistance and is in hiding; the Gestapo has captured his older sister. The N***s know who he is and are searching for him and his younger sister. Can they make it across the Netherlands to safety?

War is a difficult subject to read about and it takes a good author to bring it to life for younger readers. This story was a page-turner. It exposes the reader to the challenges of living at this time without the descriptive horrors of war, which World War II had a lot. This is a good book for a middle school reader, as well as an adult, to learn of another time.

I enjoyed this book and will give it a 5/5. There is also a sequel, Time for Courage, which I look forward to reading. Hunger Winter can be checked out at your Mexico-Audrain County Library.

If you would like to read this book, please visit your local library to check it out or place it on hold for your TBR by using the following link: https://macpl.tlcdelivers.com/ =home

Pictured are individuals who completed the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge at the Farber Branch Library. They each received a certificate, a backpack full of prizes and selected 5 books for their age level. Congratulations to these young readers.

🍎📚✨ DAY 4️⃣ of 30 BUSINESSES IN 30 DAYS! ✨📚

Today was a VERY special stop for Relay Nutrition + The Nutrition Spot! 💚🩷

We had the honor of blessing the Audrain County–Mexico Library District in tribute to the one and only Dolly Parton! 🎀📚✨

Dolly has always believed in the power of a good book, and through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, she has helped put books into the hands of children and families all across the country. 📖❤️

So today, we wanted to celebrate the amazing people right here in our own community who help foster that same love of reading, learning, and imagination. 🥹📚

Our local library is so much more than books on shelves. It’s a place for children, families, learning, community, and connection — and we are SO thankful for the people who make it such a special place! 💚

So, in true Dolly style… we brought a little sweetness, a little sparkle, and some Loaded Teas to brighten their day! 🥤✨🎀

Dolly, this one’s for you! 💕
Thank you for reminding us that sometimes the biggest impact starts with something as simple as putting a book in a child’s hands. 📚✨

4 DAYS DOWN… 26 TO GO! 🔥
And we’re just getting started! 👀🥤

👇 WHO SHOULD WE BLESS NEXT?!
