Florida Emancipation Day is observed annually on May 20th, commemorating the date in 1865 when Union General Edward McCook read the Emancipation Proclamation in Tallahassee, finally announcing freedom to enslaved Black people in the state. On this Emancipation Day, we come together to honor the enduring spirit of freedom and the resilience of those who fought for liberation. This day commemorates a pivotal moment in history when the chains of oppression were broken, and the pursuit of equality and justice began.

Let us reflect on the sacrifices made by countless individuals who courageously stood against injustice, and let us celebrate the progress that has been achieved. While we recognize the challenges that remain, today serves as a powerful reminder of hope, strength, and the unyielding quest for human rights.

May we continue to uplift each other and work towards a future where freedom and equality are a reality for all. Happy Emancipation Day!
