It’s Public Service Recognition Week – a time that we reflect on the essential work that AFSCME members do. Whether responding to emergencies, taking our kids to school, keeping our streets and drinking water clean or caring for the sick, public service workers are the backbone of our communities. They deserve respect and dignity for all they do. This week, we extend our deepest gratitude to all those who dedicate their lives and careers to helping others, and we commit to always continuing to fight for the strong public services our communities deserve.

90 years ago, Social Security was signed into law. Since then, it’s been there for our grandparents, our parents, and now us, helping us retire, supporting families through loss and protecting those facing hardship. What began in 1935 as a promise to help senior citizens after a lifetime of hard work has grown into one of the most important lifelines in our country’s history.

For nine decades, Social Security has provided steady income to millions in retirement, offered survivor benefits to families in need, supported people with disabilities, and reduced poverty for older Americans. Social Security continues to shape lives across generations.

Here’s to 90 years of care, commitment, and making life more secure for all. Sign the pledge to protect Social Security for 90+ more years by visiting https://www.afscme.org/ssa

This Juneteenth, we recognize how far we have come, and how far we still must go. Black workers across the country continue to push for fair pay and safe working conditions. The fight for justice and equality is a long one – and one that will be won through solidarity.

Today we remember and honor those who gave everything in service to our country. Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
