Octagon Ruling -- Dec. 7, 2022

“This is huge. This is a win for Native people and the general public. This site is among a series of sites currently being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status! Thankful for all the work done by the Ohio History Connection and all the tribal nations involved. The Newark Earthworks and its sister sites deserve their stories to be told and protection for future generations.” Stacey Halfmoon, Executive Director of Culture & Historic Preservation

Some Shawnee food history for you: 🌽 We’ve commonly cultivated three types of corn - dent corn, flint corn (skwalicimi), and sweet corn (hoskipemi) and typically preserve most of the crop for later use, as opposed to eating it fresh.

Corn meal was so vital to the Shawnee diet that most families had a bag of parched corn meal (taamilokhaana) ready for emergencies or sudden journeys. Hunters and warriors always carried corn meal wrapped in a small buckskin bag to keep it dry.

The Shawnee ancestral homeland is the greater middle Ohio River Valley region, which stretches through large portions of modern Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Despite removal and marginalization from the region, the Shawnee Tribe maintains ties to this land dotted with Shawnee settlements, sacred sites, and burial grounds.

European colonization tremendously disrupted of our traditional lifeways. The spread of disease and Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) raids in the 1600s were major factors causing Shawnees to abandon their permanent agricultural settlements in the middle Ohio Valley. Initially, our communities relocated far afield, often settling with long-established trading partners, including those in modern-day Illinois, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama and Pennsylvania.

A threat to ICWA is a threat to tribal sovereignty. We’re proud to be one of 497 tribal nations who’ve signed on to briefs in support of upholding ICWA.

Protect our children. Protect ICWA. The future of Shawnee and other Native children is at stake! On Nov. 9, in Brackeen v Haaland, a small group of opponents will argue in front of the Supreme Court that ICWA protections should be taken away.

Fort Ancient Earthworks & Nature Preserve:
American Indians and archaeologists today believe Fort Ancient more likely served as a community gathering place for ceremonies and more. The space more than likely hosted ancient American Indians from across the continent, as evidenced by finely crafted ceremonial objects made of materials from far away, such as silver from Canada or obsidian from Wyoming.

Serpent Mound:
Serpent Mound is an internationally known National Historic Landmark built by the ancient American Indian cultures of Ohio. It is an effigy mound (a mound in the shape of an animal) representing a snake with a curled tail. Nearby are three burial mounds—two created by the Adena culture (800 B.C.–A.D. 100), and one by the Fort Ancient culture (A.D. 1000–1650).

Ground search of Native American site in Kansas delayed

"We have always been clear about our vision for the site. Regardless of who owns it, it centers on protection and restoration. To say otherwise is patently false, and they know it's patently false." Chief Ben Barnes

A plan to search for unmarked graves at a former Native American boarding school in Kansas is on hold amid a disagreement between a Shawnee Tribe and state and city officials overseeing the site. 10/14/2022

Domestic violence is not traditional to Native cultures, and it violates the very essence of who Native people are. This violence ends when we reclaim Indigenous values of respect and compassion, and we honor the sacredness of women and children. As relatives, it is our responsibility to speak out against domestic violence and ensure the voices of Native survivors are heard. Offenders must be stopped and held accountable. Hold space for Native survivors of domestic violence by listening to, believing, and supporting them on their journey to healing. Be a good relative by protecting and respecting Native women.
