Over the last year or so I have had to listen to people tell me how to run Turning Point. I should do this or that, or I can't do this or that! I do listen to people's suggestions, I think about them, I discuss them with my business partner, and I pray a lot!
All these experts in running rehabs and sober livings that tell me how I should be doing things, all have one thing in common. "What is that?" you might ask!
The answer is, none of them have a vested interest in the business, not a nickel. Their retirement is not invested, their credit is not on the line, they are not at risk of losing everything they have for a bunch of junkies, boozers and homeless lazy bums that they have never met before.
The cost of running this place on a good month where nothing gets broken is about 10K a month. Why so much you ask? For example, when we started the business our utilities bills were about $600 a month, as soon as I told the city we had our 501 c 3 status our bill doubled and has continued to climb to nearly $3k a month. Insurance is a $1000 a month. I even got charged at the special non-profit rate for a fire system repair of $1500 for an actual $20 part.
Keep in mind, that we do not receive any support from the state of Oklahoma, the federal government, any major donors, or collect insurance. A church did give us a $1000 in the beginning, my mom and aunt have donated, a couple of folks have donated $20 here and there, but the majority of the funds come from the clients, myself, and a lot from my business partner. We charge $150 a week and that gets them a bed, a room, a shower, access to a kitchen, rides to work, internet, TV, clean sheets, a place to wash their clothes, everything anyone needs.
My offer to anyone that wants to have a say in how things are done here, you will have that chance! All you need to do is donate $100k, which is a fraction of what my partner put in, and you will have a seat on the board. You can introduce policy, vote on it, have your ideas heard and seriously considered, the status of being a board member, a hero to other people in your church, all the glory and fame that comes with it!
