Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Kampong was the historic home and personal garden of famed plant explorer Dr. David Fairchild, and later, philanthropist and preservationist Catherine Sweeney. The waterfront estate features a Mission/Spanish Revival style house designed by Edward Clarence Dean and Fairchild's original office, now converted into a museum. The garden is renown

ed for its irreplaceable collections of rare and unusual varieties of tropical and subtropical fruits, palms, and flowering trees, shrubs and vines; many planted by Fairchild's own hands. More than 2000 plants fill the 11 acres.

Did you spot it? 👀 Tucked between the mangrove roots and ferns, waiting patiently for its next meal — usually crabs and small crustaceans hunted after dusk.

A botanical garden isn’t just about plants. It’s a living ecosystem, and our mangrove habitat at The Kampong is home to birds, insects, and more — all thriving alongside the tropical flora David Fairchild once collected.
