A sports bar in Portland, Oregon recently sparked a massive legal and civil debate after asking a group of patrons to leave the premises.
The individuals were wearing clothing from "XX-XY Athletics"—an apparel brand advocating for the restriction of transgender women in female sports categories. While watching a women’s soccer match, bar staff requested they leave after other customers complained the shirts made them uncomfortable. Later that day, the same group was removed from the Portland Thorns stadium under the NWSL fan code of conduct.
This incident has re-opened a major debate regarding public accommodations, private business rights, and free speech. Under the law, private businesses generally have the right to enforce dress codes and refuse service, provided it doesn't violate protected class discrimination laws.
