Craig Lake State Park

We told you this post was coming! A HUGE shout out to the Michigan Army National Guard 107th Engineer Battalion for work completed in early June! There were multiple projects completed and more to come in August!

One platoon worked on the development of an additional parking area, and installing culverts and safety turnouts along narrow and curvy locations along the roadway into Craig Lake State Park. Part of another platoon renovated the Small Cabin to include, siding, windows, and interior updating to include flooring, painting and tongue and groove in the main living area.

Between the EXTREMELY dedicated staff from Van Riper and Craig Lake State Parks, the crew from Lake Gogebic State Park, both the Baraga and Escanaba Construction Crews, and the 107th Engineer Battalion, these projects would not have been successful. Such a huge THANK YOU to all involved in making this continued partnership and improvements such as success!

The time has arrived, the road is OPEN! Please remember, the park is still closed to camping at this time, only day-use activities. We’ll see you all soon!

Road update!

Rain and sun are pushing things along, and things are getting close. With this weekend’s predicted weather, hopefully the few spots we are still waiting on to melt down will clear out and we will be able to open the road next week (again, hopefully)!

Road Update!

To put it simply, it’s going to be a while still. There is hard pack of snow at the southern end, and into the park is still holding a foot or more of snow. Any gravel spots showing are mush. Hopefully this week/weekends temps will start to speed things up, but we are realistically looking at a few weeks till it’s open still.

🚨Craig Lake State Park Upcoming Closure🚨

The Michigan Army National Guard (107th Engineer Battalion) will be assisting with much-needed road repairs and cabin renovations in Craig Lake State Park May 29 - June 17, 2025. During construction, the park will remain open for those with existing lodging reservations, but no new reservations will be accepted during this time. There will be limited access to backcountry sites, lodging, hiking trails, etc. (updated 3/18/25).

It’s March and the sun is out! How about the first road update of the year? It’s going to be a while still, as there is 1’+ of snow packed on the road. We’ll keep everyone updated in the weeks to come!
