We know that loneliness can be a killer, but what happens when you have no home to gather in, and are not welcome in most common spaces due to the stigma of being unhoused? How do you keep social connections intact and build new, healthy connections?

This is the reality of our unhoused neighbors who are part of our community, and they need connection to heal, just like anyone.

When we discuss community at Nest, it is not only about inviting the community into the shelter; as an organization, we regularly volunteer throughout our community as well. Last night, a few of our volunteers, Marcus, Theresa, and our Assistant Director, Janelle, gave back to the community by volunteering at the concessions stand at La Porte's Art in the Park.

Nest isn't only about bringing our guests into the community but also about bringing the community to our guests. One of our more recent examples of community at work is the gift of classes taught each Friday at 2 pm at our Michigan City location by Healing through Human Connection. This class is open to our guests and to the community. This class focuses on goal setting and how to achieve goals.

This month, we will be talking about community, and we invite you to follow along and join this impactful conversation.

When money gets tight, food is one of the first things families tend to cut, because you can stretch groceries in a way you can't stretch rent. That's how a hard summer can quietly turn into a housing crisis. In today's blog post, we talk about children and the connection between hunger and unhoused, as well as share local resources to keep families fed.

In addition, La Porte County already has free summer meals for any kid 18 and under. No paperwork, no registration. To find a site near you, text "Summer Meals" to 914-342-7744 or visit fns.usda.gov/summer/sitefinder

Know a family who could use this? Share it. Let's make sure no kid goes hungry this summer!

Congratulations to this year's 42nd Cohort of Leadership La Porte County on their graduation this afternoon. We had several graduates from the Nest team: Janelle Knowlton, our Assistant Director, and Abigail Stewart, Nest Case Manager. We also want to congratulate our amazing community partners on their staff's graduation: Kalah Riley, Executive Director of Stepping Stone Shelter for Women, Inc., and Nicole Mitchell, Program Director at Keys to Hope Community Resource Center.

Nest was honored to have staff participate this year. Leadership La Porte County is an amazing organization and vital to our community!
