🇺🇸 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb 25th Anniversary

This September 11 marks 25 years since the attacks that forever changed our nation.

We invite our community to join us for our annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb as we honor the 343 firefighters, fellow first responders, and all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and those lost after.

Together, we climb in remembrance of their courage, sacrifice, and service.

25 years later, we still remember. We still honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Last night was Police & Fire Night at the Chicago White Sox game, so naturally, a little friendly competition between Fire and PD was in order. And look who ended up on the mega screen… our very own Firefighter Alex Bell! 👀
Alex went head-to-head with a police officer in a push-up competition and brought home the win for the fire side! 💪🔥

Yesterday afternoon, crews responded to the Stop 6 beach area for a report of a juvenile struggling in the water.

The incident occurred several stops beyond the designated Washington Park Lifeguard coverage area. Upon being made aware of the emergency, lifeguards responded beyond their normal area of coverage and immediately entered the water to begin searching for the juvenile. Michigan City Fire Department personnel joined the search upon arrival, with law enforcement personnel and several brave bystanders also assisting in the search efforts.

The individual was located approximately 100 yards west of where he was last seen and was pulled from the water. CPR and lifesaving measures were immediately initiated before care was transferred to La Porte County EMS for transport to the hospital.

The juvenile was later pronounced deceased. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

Michigan City Police Department, Long Beach Police Department, Indiana DNR, Washington Park Lifeguards, and La Porte County EMS, and several brave bystanders assisted with the response.

At the time of the incident, Washington Park Lifeguards had a red flag posted due to large waves and strong rip currents. We urge everyone visiting Lake Michigan to be mindful of beach hazard statements, warning flags, and changing water conditions. Before entering the water check current conditions, swim near a lifeguard whenever possible, never swim alone, and keep a close eye on children and teens.

On Monday, Michigan City firefighters responded to a house fire on William Street at approximately 3:40 a.m. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the home.

Two residents were asleep on the second floor when the fire began. One resident woke after noticing an unusual smell and discovered the fire downstairs. Both were able to escape, including one resident who was assisted from a second-floor balcony with a ladder provided by a neighbor. Both residents were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, with one also suffering burn injuries.

There were no working smoke alarms in the home. Had working alarms been present, the residents could have been alerted to the fire much sooner and may have been able to escape before being injured. This incident is an important reminder that working smoke alarms save lives.

Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Ladder 1, and command staff responded, with assistance from Michigan City Police and LaPorte County EMS. One firefighter was also transported to the hospital and has since been released.

The Michigan City Fire Marshal, assisted by an investigator from the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, determined the fire originated in the living room. The exact point of origin remains undetermined.

We also want to recognize the neighbors who were awake, called 911, and took action to help the residents escape.

⚠️ Generator Safety & Carbon Monoxide Warning ⚠️
We’ve received several calls and questions regarding carbon monoxide (CO) concerns related to generator use. If you are using a generator during a power outage, please remember that generators produce carbon monoxide which is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly.

Never operate a generator inside a home, garage, basement, shed, or other enclosed or partially enclosed space. Not even with doors or windows open.

- Keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home, doors, windows, and vents.
- Always point the generator’s exhaust away from the home.
- Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide alarms, especially near sleeping areas.
- Never use grills, camp stoves, or other fuel-burning equipment indoors for heat or power.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion.

If your CO alarm sounds or you suspect carbon monoxide in your home, get everyone outside into fresh air immediately and call 911. Do not re-enter the home until it has been determined safe.

Please share this information with friends, family, and neighbors who may be using generators during the outage. A few extra feet and a working CO alarm can save a life.

B Shift crews responded to a residential structure fire that originated in the kitchen, causing heavy smoke and fire damage throughout the home. Fortunately, the resident was not home at the time of the fire, and no people were injured.

Firefighters rescued three cats from the home. One cat was successfully revived after being overcome by smoke. All three were transported to a local animal hospital for evaluation and care.

Our Fire Marshal was assisted by an investigator from the Indiana State Fire Marshal's Office. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and has not yet been determined.

We appreciate the coordinated efforts of all responding personnel whose swift actions helped limit further damage and save the family's pets.
