The Environmental Commission sponsored a volunteer work session on the Democrat Road side of Mickleton Park on Sunday, May 17th. They spent the morning preparing a new bed and planted three native trees. Their enthusiasm for improving the environment is really appreciated.

You are welcome to join them again this Saturday, May 30th, on the Democrat Road side of Mickleton Park. We will be meeting there from 8:00 to 11:00. You can arrive at any time and stay as long as you want. Bring gloves, drinking water, and any favorite gardening tools. Some additional tools will be available.

Volunteer Opportunity: May 16 8am to 11am

Please join us at our next park volunteer day will on Saturday, May 16 at 8:00am at Mickleton Park on Democrat Road. We will be continuing our spring project, creating 'soft landing' areas around many of the park's trees. Volunteers can expect to clean up the areas around our trees, provide fresh mulch, and put new plants into the ground. If you are interested we would love to have your help. Please dress appropriately and bring any tools (trowels, spades, mattocks etc) that you might have. We will have some spares, if you don't. Work gloves and water are strongly recommended.
Commission and Green Team members will be working from 8 until at least 11 and you are welcome to join us at any time for as much as you are able. We look forward to seeing you!

On Saturday May 9th, our friend Bernadine Visalli came to Mickleton Park to band the four bluebird babies that were born in the bluebird box installed by Richard Gess. Five eggs were laid and resulted in four healthy bluebirds. One of the eggs was not viable. Ms Visalli, the president and county coordinator of the New Jersey Bluebird Society, banded the four birds and recorded the date and location of their births. Because the bluebird parents found the house so early, there is a possibility that they will have two additional clutches this season. Bluebirds tend to return to the same nesting box for about five years, so we can expect to see more bluebirds at Mickleton Park.

An exciting update from our friend Rich Gess regarding the bluebird boxes installed back in March at Mickleton Park:

"Good news. The box in the trail has 5 eggs and there was a female in the box when I checked it. The bird lays an egg once a day. When a day is missed they are done. Could be anywhere from 4-7. Then incubation starts. Exciting, especially when you see how quick they found the box. We should now leave them alone for at least 12 days. Next time the box can be checked is 4/30. This is great for a brand new location.

The other box is House Sparrows. We will leave that alone right now so they don’t bother the first box."

We share Rich's excitement that these boxes are seeing activity so quickly. Check back soon for more updates! Thanks again, Rich.
