Last week 20 members of our Student Flight participated in the 2026 Maryland Department of Emergency Management Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX), a large multiagency event designed to test and improve emergency response capabilities in the region.

The exercise was held at Gunpowder Falls State Park and brought together various local, state and federal emergency response agencies, including the Maryland Helicopter Aquatic Response Team, the Maryland Army National Guard, Baltimore County Police, Maryland State Police and more to tackle a simulated large scale search and rescue incident.

Student Flight, managed by the 175th Force Support Squadron, is a program for new Maryland Air National Guard members who are awaiting Basic Military Training. Our Student Flight volunteers acted as simulated victims of a natural disaster event, often being hoisted into the air by emergency responders.

"For the Student Flight members, the exercise was more than just a training event; it was an opportunity to contribute to the readiness of the state's emergency responders and to see firsthand the impact of their future service," said Maryland Air National Guard Senior Master Sgt. Robert Pounders, force development office superintendent. "Their involvement not only made the exercise more realistic for the other participants but also provided them with a memorable and educational experience that will undoubtedly serve them well as they begin their military careers. The 175th Wing is proud of its Student Flight members for their professionalism and dedication during this important state exercise."

Last week our Information Protection Office hosted representatives and adjudicators from the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency for a roundtable event involving wing leadership and staff, as well as representatives from the Air National Guard Readiness Center, neighboring state CIPs (Chief of Information Protection) and some of our Maryland Army National Guard counterparts.

Attendees had the chance to see live system demonstrations, learn more about risk management and continuous vetting, and also participate in specialized breakout sessions.

This unique event worked towards bridging the gap between unit-level security processes and national level adjudication, expanding perspectives and streamlining the security clearance process for National Guardsmen.

"Hosting this event was critical because the security clearance process can often feel like a one-way street of submitting paperwork into a void," said Mr. Steven Adornato, 175th Wing chief of information protection. "By bringing DCSA directly to the 175th Wing, we broke down those communication barriers and moved beyond just trading emails. It allowed us to leverage the unique perspective of a former wing member now working at DCSA to build a genuine face-to-face partnership. This level of direct interaction, especially bringing in our Army Guard and regional counterparts, has the potential to serve as a national model for how the Guard and DCSA can work together more efficiently to maintain readiness."

Meet Maryland Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Ronnie Huggins, an information systems security officer for the 175th Communications Squadron.
He began his journey in the National Guard as a crew chief assigned to the 175th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. As the mission for the wing shifted away from flying Huggins adapted and changed as well to focus on the cyber mission at hand.
“I am proud to serve in the National Guard for many reasons," stated Huggins. "My biggest reason is the effectiveness of our members and our ability to adapt to changing missions. I am looking forward to the development and modernization of the technology the Air Force is using and getting to be a part of that advancement."

Airmen and Soldiers of the Maryland National Guard sharpened their response capabilities this past week during National Guard Reaction Force (NGRF) certification training.

The sessions focused on non-lethal force tactics, including taser certification, OC spray (pepper spray) certification, and practical applications. To better understand the effects of the equipment they carry, Airmen and Soldiers experienced being tased firsthand.

Following the certification portion, teams moved into civil disturbance techniques, practicing the coordination required to maintain a secure shield wall reinforced by baton tactics. This rigorous training ensures our personnel remain prepared to provide a professional, disciplined, and effective response in support of civil authorities when called upon.

We stayed very busy this past weekend, marked by significant leadership milestones, as well as a focus on airman wellness and mental health.

On Friday, our wing featured a unique approach to mental health and resilience. Members gathered in the hangar for "1 Degree of Separation," a comedy show featuring Jason Resler, Jen Adams, Nef Johnson and Julie Drake. By using humor to navigate the serious topics of depression and su***de prevention, the event opened the door for honest conversations and provided resource tables where support services were available for members to explore.

The wing also marked a transition in leadership within our cyber domain at the change of command ceremony for the 276th Cyberspace Operations Squadron, where Lt. Col. Christopher Quinlan relinquished command to Lt. Col. Robert Deluca Jr., ensuring a seamless continuation of the squadron’s critical mission.

Additionally, Brig. Gen. Carbonell-López met with a few of our warrant officers to highlight the specialized technical expertise they provide and their ongoing impact on the wing’s mission readiness.

Many of our Airmen were also recognized by their individual units for receiving distinguished awards and decorations, as well as the honor of promoting to their next rank, including our very own commander!
