In emergency medical services, recognition often follows the lights and sirens- the critical calls, the urgency, the moments that demand immediate action.

But not every impact in this profession is measured in minutes.

Some are measured in years.

For more than two decades, John MacMillan has been a steady presence in EMS- not only as a provider, but as a mentor and instructor whose influence extends far beyond any single call. Long before confidence is built and experience is earned, every provider starts somewhere uncertain.

For one EMT, that moment came just four months into her career. Thatโ€™s when John became something more than an instructor. โ€œHeโ€™s been my backbone since I was just four months in,โ€ she said.

Not just someone who taught the job- someone who stayed.

Twenty years later, that hasnโ€™t changed.

As she now works toward becoming an instructor herself, he continues to guide her- offering advice, sharing knowledge, and showing up the same way he always has.

Consistent.
Present.
Invested.

โ€œHeโ€™s still thereโ€ฆ every step of the way,โ€ she shared.

Throughout his career, John MacMillan has mentored countless providers, helping shape not only their skills, but their confidence and resilience in a field that demands both. These are the contributions that rarely draw attention- but are essential to the strength of the profession itself. Because behind every capable provider is often someone who helped them get there.

And in this case, that story comes full circle.

The EMT he once guided in her earliest days is no longer just a student.

She is his wife. โ€œIโ€™m proud to say heโ€™s also my husband.โ€

In a field defined by urgency, itโ€™s easy to overlook the people who quietly build its future.

But their impact is lasting.

Carried forward in every provider
theyโ€™ve trainedโ€ฆ
every life theyโ€™ve influencedโ€ฆ
and every person who keeps going because someone believed in them first.

John MacMillan is one of those people.
And his legacy is already in motion.

Before i tell you about our new ambulace i would be remiss if we didn't say Good-bye to the old one. Just a sneeze shy of 8 yrs. We went 164,598 miles and had 3731 calls.
