It’s required for all facilities and haulers in Addison County to collect the “mandated recyclables.” The “mandated recyclables” are banned from trash disposal: glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jugs, boxboard, corrugated cardboard, magazines, aluminum and steel cans, aluminum foil and pie plates, and paper.

More than just the mandated recyclables are accepted in curbside collection systems. For help answering any recycling questions, look at the District’s A-Z Guide at AddisonCountyRecycles.org/guide. If you are still confused, feel free to call the District at (802) 388-2333 for help or email [email protected].

Sharing this great spotlight from a neighboring District. For blue bin recycling, we look for , , and in Addison County, as that is what our Materials Recycling Facility collects. Packaging is often confusing for folks, as not everything with a recycling symbol can go in one's blue bin. We at the District are here to help answer questions on all things recycling. Please reach out with any questions, wacky items, or concerns.

Remember these tips to help keep compost piles bear-free:

1. Layer “browns” on top of your compost pile. Browns are any carbon-rich material like straw, ripped-up paper, dry leaves, wood chips, hay, garden clippings, etc.
2. Turn your compost regularly.
3. Take down birdfeeders when bears aren’t hibernating.
4. Do not compost meat, fish, and bones at home.
5. Make sure your bin is enclosed, locked, and lined with a wire.
6. Protect open piles of compost with an electric fence.
7. Place an ammonia-soaked rag in a plastic bucket next to your compost. Change the rag every 2-3 weeks.
8. Move compost piles away from the forest edge.

For more information, contact ACSWMD at 802-388-2333.

Happy ! 🌼 Now that we finally have some warmer weather be sure to remember your composting ratio...

3 parts "browns" or carbon-rich materials like straw, hay, small woody materials, dead leaves, and paper

1 part "greens" or nitrogen-rich materials like food scraps, grass, and manures

And remember, no meat, fish, bones, or dairy in your backyard compost piles! When in doubt, bring scraps to a town drop-off or to the District Transfer Station.
