Have you ever been curious about why fire hydrants are painted certain colors? Fire hydrants are color coded based on how much water they flow and the pressure it provides. This is very important to the fire department responding to your fire. The department will base their hydrant selection based on the best flows for the operation.
The City of Middlesboro does not own or maintain the fire hydrants located in the city. The water company does however and provides inspection and flow testing for each one of the approximately 300 hydrants. We would like to inform the citizens of the reason for the multiple colors. Please do not repaint one of these hydrants because the color is very important to the fire department.
