Today, six members of the Middlesex Hose Company attended Hopewell Fire's annual Conference, where we had the opportunity to listen to guest speaker Dr. David Griffin.

Dr. Griffin shared his firsthand experience from the Charleston Sofa Super Store Fire (2007), a tragic incident where nine firefighters lost their lives. As the officer on the first-due engine that day, he provided powerful insight into the events that unfolded, the lessons learned, and the lasting impact it had on him and the fire service.

He also spoke openly about his personal struggles with PTSD following the incident, reminding us all of the importance of mental health and taking care of one another, both on and off the fireground.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from his experience and continue to bring that knowledge back to better serve and protect our community.

🤫 INTRODUCING THE "QUIET-ZONE" RESPONSE INITIATIVE

In response to recent community feedback (complaints) regarding siren noise, the Middlesex Fire Department is proud to announce we are the first in the county to go 100% Silent.

Starting today, our apparatus drivers have replaced traditional sirens with our new "Stealth-Tone" technology. When responding to emergencies, our crews will no longer use loud sirens. Instead, firefighters will:

Use high-powered handheld kazoos for a more "whimsical and calming" approach to traffic clearing.

Deploy a designated "Shouter" in the passenger seat to yell "BEEP BEEP, COMING THROUGH!" out the window.

Flash a series of polite, rhythmic Morse code signals with the headlights to ask for the right of way.

We believe this will greatly improve the sleep quality of our residents while maintaining our quick and efficient response times. Thank you for your continued support as we move into this quieter future! 🤐🚒

🚨 PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE 🚨

Middlesex Hose Company would like to advise residents and motorists to use extreme caution in the area of State Route 245 and surrounding side roads.

Our crews are currently out operating at multiple locations due to flooding conditions. Water may be covering portions of the roadway, creating hazardous and unpredictable driving conditions.

⚠️ Please remember: • Slow down and stay alert
• Do NOT drive through standing water
• Watch for emergency personnel and apparatus in the roadway
• Allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes if possible

This past weekend, members of Middlesex Hose Company joined several departments from across the region for the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC) hands-on flashover training. The training began in the classroom, but the majority of time was spent in “The Can,” where members observed and learned fire behavior in a controlled environment.

🚨 Structure Fire – Mutual Aid Response 🚨

On March 21st, 2026 at approximately 1:33 PM, Middlesex Hose Company was dispatched to the Village of Rushville for a reported structure fire at 65 S. Main Street.

Upon arrival, crews were met with a fully engulfed residential structure. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the fire and prevent further spread.
All occupants were able to safely evacuate prior to emergency personnel arrival, and no injuries were reported.

Despite the efforts of responding crews, the structure was deemed a total loss.

We operated on scene alongside multiple agencies including Rushville Fire, Potter Fire, Crystal Beach Fire, Benton Fire, Yates County OEM, Middlesex Ambulance, Yates County Fire Investigation Team, the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Police.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Yates County Fire Investigation Team.
We would like to thank all assisting agencies for their teamwork and professionalism during this incident.

We have been informed by the Town; The boil water advisory for Middlesex has been officially lifted. The water is now safe for normal use and consumption.
