Today we recognize a true hero: Assistant Chief Gary Gillitzer. After 40+ years of service, Gary will be retiring as Assistant Chief of the Middleton Fire Department. His retirement isn’t just the end of a role—it’s a celebration of a lasting legacy.
A legacy built on service, leadership, craftsmanship, and mentorship. Thank you, Gary, for the years you’ve given not only to the community you serve, but to the people who count on you—your commitment and dedication have shown up in everything you do. And thank you for taking care of more than just your crews. You helped keep the machines ready and reliable—the ones that get us to emergencies when every second matters.
Gary is a skilled mechanic, and he understands the difference between “working” and “ready.”It’s the time you spend paying attention to the details. It’s the inspections done before something breaks. It’s the parts replaced before they become a problem. That mindset doesn’t just keep equipment running—it helps keep people safe.
But Gary’s influence reaches far beyond the station. He has taught and guided many within the fire community, passing on knowledge, skills, and standards that help others succeed and respond with confidence. Whether through direct instruction or through the everyday example he sets, Gary has helped shape a generation of firefighters and leaders.
Gary, congratulations on your retirement. Thank you for 40+ years of commitment to this department and this community. Thank you for 20 years of leadership as Assistant Chief. Thank you for the countless hours spent teaching, maintaining, and preparing—so others could respond, act, and protect with confidence.
May this next chapter bring you rest, pride, and moments that feel just as fulfilling as the work you’ve done for so many years. We’ll take it from here, Chief.
