The Middleton Police Department mourns the loss of Officer Rob Smith. “Smitty” spent many years as a Middleton Police officer before transferring to Boxford Police Department, and leaves behind countless friends here and all across Essex County. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rob‘s family during this difficult time.

Chief LeColst and Captain Armitage recently had the pleasure of meeting George Mercer, a longtime Middleton resident, who generously presented the Middleton Fire and Police Departments with a beautiful handcrafted American flag to display in our new Public Safety Building.

We are honored by Mr. Mercer's thoughtful gift and look forward to proudly displaying it in the front lobby, where it can be enjoyed by all who visit.

Please see below about a detour on Rt 62 at the end of Boston St heading into N Reading, for Friday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (July 17, 21, and 22).

Due to weather, the significant traffic detour for Elm Street heading westbound will be in effect on Friday, July 17, 2026, Tuesday, July 21, 2026, and now THURSDAY, July 23rd from 6am to 4pm due to road construction.

Significant Traffic detour for Elm Street heading westbound will be in effect on Friday, July 17, 2026, Tuesday, July 21, 2026, and Wednesday, July 22, 2026 from 6am to 4pm due to road construction.

If you are planning to travel into North Reading from Middleton via Elm Street during this time, you must use the detour. The detour will take you to the four-way stop sign at Main Street and Lowell Street in Lynnfield. At the stop sign, turn right onto Lowell Street and continue straight onto Chestnut Street in North Reading. From there, turn right onto Park Street to reach Washington Street. Please see the map attached to the post.

We would like to congratulate Captain Matthew Armitage on his graduation from the Police Executive Research Forum's (PERF) Senior Management Institute for Police training (SMIP) 99th session. The Police Executive Research Forum's Senior Management Institute for Police is a rigorous three-week executive development program. Designed for upper-level law enforcement leaders (lieutenants and above), SMIP trains executives in crisis management, organizational change, political management, and emerging policing trends. SMIP brings together leading thinkers in corporate and public management to provide intensive training in the latest management theories and practices, innovative solutions to organizational problems, and discussion of important issues in managing public service organizations effectively. SMIP focuses on leadership and executive development. PERF helps to improve the delivery of police services through the exercise of strong national leadership; public debate of police and criminal justice issues; and research and policy development.

Congratulations Captain Armitage on your graduation from one of the elite Senior Management trainings in the country.

The Middleton Police and Fire Departments recently received several sensory support backpacks containing a variety of items designed to help comfort and assist neurodivergent individuals during emergency situations.

This initiative was spearheaded by Jonathan Parker, a seventh-grade student at Masconomet Regional School, through the school's Power of One Campaign. The program challenges students to identify a community need and take action to make a meaningful difference.

After developing the idea, Jonathan reached out to members of the community and successfully solicited donations to fund the purchase of these sensory items. The backpacks will be carried by both police officers and firefighters and will provide valuable tools to help create a calmer and more supportive environment during emergency responses.

We sincerely appreciate Jonathan's initiative, dedication, and generosity in leading this project. His efforts will have a positive impact on our community, and we look forward to placing these important resources into service.

This past weekend, we were proud to host our annual Fishing Derby in honor of Officer Michele Nowak.

We were thrilled to see so many families and community members come out to enjoy the day. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event another great success.
