“Mike Crute, Democratic candidate for governor and host for Devil’s Advocate Radio, said “I smell the medicine in the air today and it smells like freedom.” He said that he’s been advocating for legalizing cannabis for seven years on his show. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, practicing neurosurgeon and CNN’s chief medical correspondent, does features on the show and in a letter to Attorney General of the United States Jeff Sessions he cited a study by Rand Corp who found that states with legalized medical ma*****na and functioning dispensaries had a 20 percent decline in opioid deaths between 1999 and 2010. Other studies estimated a 25 percent reduction.

“It is my heartfelt belief that the good people do smoke ma*****na and until we start setting the example as business leaders and as politicians, until we acknowledge that responsible adults use ma*****na recreationally and for their medicine, I don’t know how we can move this conversation forward,” Crute said.

A 2017 report by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that drug overdose deaths in the United States have more than tripled from 1999 to 2015. Survey data indicates that tens of millions of Americans misuse prescription opioids, sedatives, tranquilizers, and stimulants. The misuse of prescription drugs is related to high levels of prescribing such medications, with prescribers in 2016 writing 66.5 opioid and 25.2 sedative prescriptions for every 100 Americans. However opioid prescriptions have been annually decreasing by 4.9 percent from 2012 through 2016.”

“Mike Crute, a liberal talk radio host and the latest entrant to the governor's race, said he backed raising the gas tax by 8 cents a gallon — the most of any of the candidate — and reinstating indexing.

Crute said he would he would raise heavy truck fees but not passenger vehicle fees. He would eliminate the recent fee increase on electric vehicles. He opposes tolling and would put more money into mass transit.”

The Democratic candidates for governor want to put more money into Wisconsin’s roads, and most of them are prepared to raise the gas tax to do it.

“NAEP scores come out generally every two years and a new round was released a few days ago. The scores for Wisconsin stayed generally flat and were unimpressive. Wisconsin’s ranking compared to other states has slid gradually for many years. Broken down by ethnic and racial groups, Wisconsin does worse than the national averages in every grouping, including that white kids do worse than white kids nationwide.

The overall scores and the gaps between white and black students remain huge, among the worst in the nation overall. One example from the new results: Among eighth-graders, the gap between white and black students in reading skills in Wisconsin was the largest of any state, and the score for black students overall was the lowest of any state. Among black eighth-graders in Wisconsin, 9% scored as proficient in reading and 52% in the lowest category, below basic. Hispanic kids did somewhat better — 24% proficient or advanced, 32% below basic.

You knew all this already? You’re tired of it? Nothing can fix this? There’s nothing I can do about it?

Shame on all of us for being part of a broad Wisconsin reality that thinks this way and shows so little outrage or commitment to change.”

“Talk radio is a get-out-the-vote mechanism,” Crute said. “And my goal is to keep people passionate and plugged in.”

He added that Walker needs to be taken to task in a debate. Walker only has “bumper stickers and platitudes,” he said.

“I think if someone ever got on the stage with Scott Walker and rhetorically punched him the mouth over and over again for his own record, I don’t think he can stand up and support his own record” he said. “He will wilt if I’m his debate partner.”

Crute, 47, said he's getting in because none of the candidates already in the field — which has been growing since last summer — are demonstrating the "boldness of candidacy" it would take for a Democrat to beat Republican Gov. Scott Walker, a skilled politician with a strong campaign infrastructure.

"It’s not that there are not people I admire in the field. They’re all really nice people," Crute said. "But Scott Walker, in my opinion, is an S.O.B. and if you are not willing to at least act that part when necessary, then you probably cannot beat him in a head-to-head matchup."

Some insiders aren't pleased by more Democrats running for governor — but others say the continued interest in running is just a sign of strong tailwinds for the party.
