Thank you to the Lynnfield Senior Center's Men's Club for their visit to our Middleton facility this week. This group took a tour to learn how the Middleton Jail and House of Correction operates and why our Department is achieving the lowest recidivism rate while spending the least per inmate of all counties in Massachusetts. Thank you to Assistant Superintendent Maurice Pratt for leading the tour and to our intern Luke for helping out for the day!

Congratulations to Sgt. Charlie Ober on being named Mentor of the Year by Opportunity Works' Project SEARCH program!
Project SEARCH is a business-led internship program that helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities gain the skills and experience needed to secure meaningful, competitive employment. Through the longstanding partnership between Opportunity Works and Northern Essex Community College, Project SEARCH has grown from internships in 10 departments to more than 30, creating life-changing opportunities for participants throughout the Merrimack Valley.

Today marked planting day at the gardens of our Lawrence Pre-Release and Re-Entry Center, where rehabilitation, teamwork, and service to others took root alongside thousands of seeds.
Several incarcerated individuals volunteered their time to work alongside Sgt. Dennis Laubner, planting more than 1,000 seeds that will grow into zucchini, squash, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, and other fresh produce. Potatoes and corn are already thriving in the ground, and soon, volunteers will plant more than 8,000 pumpkin seeds. Plans are also underway for a herb garden.
The harvest from these gardens serves a purpose far greater than the growing season itself. Produce is used to help feed individuals housed throughout our facilities, while surplus crops are donated to local food pantries and community meal programs. Last year, these efforts resulted in more than 35,000 pounds of fresh produce donated to those in need.
For the volunteers, the garden provides an opportunity to develop valuable skills, work together toward a common goal, and most importantly, give back to the community. Many expressed pride in knowing that their efforts will help families and individuals facing food insecurity.
Joining the volunteers for planting day were Superintendent Heidi Mora and Assistant Superintendents Jose Hernandez, Krystina McFarland, and Sean Gallagher, whose support reflects the department's commitment to programs that foster personal growth, responsibility, and positive community impact.

Essex County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Sheriff Peter Karvelas and K-9 Vlad helped save a life during a late-night search and rescue operation last week.
A local police department requested mutual aid assistance after a missing person abandoned their vehicle and ran into the woods. Officers later learned the individual was experiencing a mental health crisis and was believed to be endangered.
Upon arriving at the scene, K-9 Vlad was immediately deployed and began tracking through thick vegetation, a lake, and several creeks. After approximately 15 minutes, K-9 Vlad successfully located the individual deep in the woods suffering from serious injuries. Officers were then able to guide EMS personnel to the location so emergency medical treatment could begin before the individual was transported to a nearby hospital.
Thanks to the teamwork, determination, and exceptional tracking ability of Deputy Sheriff Karvelas and K-9 Vlad, a life was saved that night!

We recently celebrated the completion of the Changing Lives Through Literature program at the Lawrence Pre-Release and Re-entry Center’s Men’s Facility — the first time the program has been offered there.
The program, which has also been successfully offered at our Women in Transition Program, uses literature and group discussion to encourage personal growth, accountability, communication, and positive decision-making.
Thank you to our partners from Haverhill District Court, Probation Officer Jocelyn Torres, Probation Officer David Fairweather, First Justice Judge Cesar Archilla, and Facilitator Lindsay Prendergast for helping make this impactful program possible.
