Today marks the 82nd anniversary of FourChaplainsDay
a powerful story of interfaith unity and ultimate sacrifice.

On February 3, 1943, at 12:55 AM, the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was torpedoed by German submarine U-223 just 150 miles from Greenland. The ship would sink in less than 20 minutes.

THE FOUR CHAPLAINS:

Lt. George L. Fox (Methodist, 42) - WWI veteran with Silver Star and Purple Heart
Lt. Alexander D. Goode (Jewish Rabbi, 31) - Scholar and athlete from Brooklyn
Lt. John P. Washington (Catholic, 34) - Former gang leader turned priest
Lt. Clark V. Poling (Dutch Reformed, 32) - Seventh-generation minister

THEIR FINAL ACT:

As panic erupted, these four chaplains moved through the darkness calming the frightened and guiding men to safety. When life jackets ran out, they removed their own and gave them to four young soldiers.

Critically: They didn't call out for their own faith, they simply gave to the next men in line.

Survivors saw them arms linked on the slanting deck, voices raised in prayer as the ship went down. Rabbi Goode was reciting the Ein K'eloheinu prayer in those final moments.

THE TOLL:

Of 902 men aboard, 672 perished. Only 230 survived.

UNPRECEDENTED HONOR:

Congress created a unique award, the Four Chaplains' Medal, presented by President Eisenhower in 1961. This medal was never given before and will never be given again.

Their sacrifice reminds us that true heroism means choosing others over ourselves when it matters most.

May their memories be a blessing.

With profound sadness, the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police mourns the passing of Chaplain Jim McGuire.

Chaplain McGuire was a pillar of our organization and the law enforcement community. Elected Chaplain of the NJ State FOP Lodge in September 2020, he devoted more than five decades to the Fraternal Order of Police, having been a proud member since 1973. He honorably served the Jersey City Police Department for 33 years, retiring as a Lieutenant after a career marked by meritorious service.

His commitment to the FOP was unwavering—serving as Treasurer of Jersey City Lodge #4 for 14 years and holding numerous State FOP committee roles, including long-standing service on Ways & Means, Tactical North, and Tactical Central Committees. Beyond the FOP, Chaplain McGuire was a dedicated leader within the Honor Legion of the Police Departments of the State of New Jersey, including a decade as Chairman of the Awards Committee.

Chaplain McGuire’s legacy is one of faith, service, leadership, and compassion. He will be deeply missed, but his impact will never be forgotten.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him.

Rest in peace, Chaplain McGuire. Your watch is complete. 🕊️💙

Looking back at an article from January 2011 regarding my Human Trafficking Senior Case management work and community educational outreach, I couldn’t have imagined that just a few years later, I would embrace the role of Program Coordinator for the Family Reunification program. It has truly been an excellent opportunity to contribute in this way! Today, I am thrilled to serve as the Regional Director of Monmouth/Ocean County at RCHP Affordable Housing Interfaith Rise. As the scripture beautifully states, “As you have done this to the least of these, you have done it to me.”
