Team 316:
As we enter this holiday season of joy and celebration with our families and friends, remember that this joyous season historically is a period of time that is often marred by an increased number of mishaps and accidents. As you take advantage of this time to visit with families and friends or just enjoy the downtime of the long weekends, we ask that you look out for one another. Continue to exercise sound judgment and take prudent action to avoid any senseless loss of life.
We expect all leaders to ensure their personnel receive a safety briefing prior to the beginning of this Holiday Season. Let's ensure we use the tools we have to guarantee the well-being of our Families and fellow Soldiers. Take this time to conduct impromptu safety briefings and stress the use of seat belts. Discuss the importance of driving within posted speed limits and at speeds that are safe for local weather conditions. Be cognizant of road conditions and inclement weather that may impact your travels while on leave or in the local area.
If you plan on attending holiday parties where alcohol will be served, you will have a plan to avoid drinking and driving, or getting into a vehicle with someone who has been drinking. Your plan of action will include appointing a designated driver, handing your keys to the host, or abstaining from drinking when you know you will be driving.
Highlight safe practices at home and make fire prevention a priority this holiday season. Everyone should test their smoke alarm and rehearse emergency evacuation plans. Be mindful that candles are twice as likely to cause a residential fire in December compared to any other month. To avoid tragedy, ensure that candles and other holiday decorations, such as Christmas tree lights, do not pose a fire hazard.
As we celebrate the holiday season, our goal is not to lose a single Soldier, civilian, or family member due to an accident. Let's all make this the safest and most joyful holiday season ever by looking out for each other.
