As we wrap up our partnership with Salve Regina’s Conservation Biology class, we’re excited to share from the final group we have yet to hear from our night sky monitors 🌙✨

Hear from Jillian as she reflects on her group’s findings and what she enjoyed most about studying the night sky throughout the semester. From tracking light pollution to learning to access sky quality readings, this group offered a unique perspective on conservation after dark.

A huge thank you to all of the students for their thoughtful work, curiosity, and dedication to protecting the natural world - day and night 💫

On this episode of Chirps & Warbles with Jay, we’re talking all about nesting! 🐦🌿

Ever wondered how to tell if a bird has made a home in your yard, or what materials they use to build it?

From twigs and grasses to candy wrappers and aluminum foil, every nest is unique to the bird. Take a closer look around you, you might have some feathered friends living closer than you think!

As we began preparing for the Studio renovation, our team carefully relocated more than 1,300 ornithology books, field guides, and academic journals to safe storage - an effort that came with a little dust and a lot of dedication.

From clearing out years of history to thoughtfully restoring the space, this project has been a true labor of love and we couldn’t be happier with how the Studio has come back to life!

This incredible collection, generously donated by Paul and Francine Buckley in 2023, represents a legacy of learning, curiosity, and conservation that we’re proud to preserve and carry forward.

Projects like this renovation are made possible through the support of our community. A special thanks to the van Beuren Charitable Foundation and the Champlin Foundation for their generosity on this project.

If you believe in protecting spaces for education, nature, and discovery, we invite you to be part of it through our Spring Appeal 💛

Every contribution helps us continue this important work today and for generations to come.

Today we’re checking in with our wildlife monitoring team through our partnership with 🌿

Using trail cameras, these students are tracking mammal activity across Norman Bird Sanctuary, helping deepen their understanding of habitat health and giving us valuable insight into the ecosystems we care for every day.

We’re so grateful for the time, curiosity, and hard work they’ve put in this semester!

Yesterday, we hosted our very first Osprey Nest Monitoring Training as part of a statewide effort to track and protect osprey populations in Rhode Island!

With two osprey nests on our campus, this work gives us a unique opportunity to contribute valuable data that helps researchers better understand nesting success, migration patterns, and long-term population health.

From learning how to safely observe nests to collecting meaningful field data, our volunteers are now equipped to help monitor these incredible birds throughout the season!

And if you’re interested in getting involved or learning more about the Rhode Island Osprey population, you can visit The Audubon Society of Rhode Island website and explore how you can be part of osprey conservation efforts💚

Our Salve students in the Water Quality Group are getting hands-on-sampling for macroinvertebrates (tiny organisms without a backbone!) to better understand the health of our ecosystem. These small but mighty indicators help tell a bigger story about water quality and biodiversity.

This is an especially exciting moment for us as it’s the very first time Norman Bird Sanctuary is conducting macroinvertebrate sampling! 👏

Through experiences like this, students aren’t just learning in the classroom, they’re contributing to real research and helping us deepen our understanding of the biodiversity right here on our property.
