Thursday the team presented our STEAM program at the Connecticut Fire Academy, during the Public and Life Safety conference.

Dep Fire Marshal Parmelee, through collaboration with Beman Middle School staff, created a program that couples STEAM with a career in the fire service.

In May over 300 8th graders visited SFD to apply theories with practical applications.

The program has evolved and has now been presented to over 700 students.
We are very proud of the collaboration and the programs success.

There is no such thing as “routine”
On a weekly inspection of Marine 3, Engine 32 crew spotted a person in distress on the river bank.

The person was walking along the river bank and ventured out as it was low tide. Then without notice he sank over waist deep in the mud.

Engine 32 crew quickly went to action donning cold water suits and rope then started to rescue the person. Truck 34 was dispatched for more personnel.

Rescuers had to use boards to create a stable ground and the person was safely extracted, after some pulling and hand digging.

The person was treated on the scene by SFD EMT’s and transported to Middlesex Hospital by Hunters Ambulance for evaluation.

It was estimated he was stuck for close to 2 hours. Yes, he left his cell phone on shore for fear it would drop in the river.

Tuesday evening members of Portland CT Fire Department City of Middletown Professional Firefighters Local 1073 and South Fire District Firefighters IAFF Local 3918 held a dive training operation.

Marine 3 was anchored out adjacent to Petzolds Marine and used as a dive platform.

Portland Marine 7 brought divers back and forth to Marine 3.

Diving operations follow a set search pattern which is “scribed”by a line tender. Divers and tenders communicate through an intercom system and by tugging on tether lines.

There is limited visibility and divers went to a depth of 15 to 20 feet.

A total of 8 divers went through the operation. Dive operations are labor intensive and follow strict protocols for safety.

Our dive teams practice year round and are often called outside of our area for their expertise
