Honoring Our Four Legged Heroes on National Police K-9 Day
Every year on September 1st, we recognize National Police K-9 Day. A powerful moment to pause and honor the remarkable canines who stand shoulder to shoulder with law enforcement officers every single day.
Behind every K-9 is an extraordinary level of dedication, rigorous ongoing training, and unyielding readiness 365 days a year. These dogs and their handlers train tirelessly to master tracking, apprehension, and detection, ensuring they are always prepared for whatever situation arises.
When the call comes in, police K-9s are routinely the first ones in. They face high stakes, unpredictable environments with a level of fearlessness and loyalty that is unmatched. Day in and day out, they put themselves in harm's way, relying on their instincts, training, and trust in their partners to keep both officers and the community safe.
Today, we extend our deepest gratitude to these brave K-9s and the handlers who work alongside them. Thank you to our current K-9s Camo & Mika for your unwavering courage, their relentless hard work, and their service on the front lines, today and every day. We also remember and thank all of our prior K9’s for their service as well and will never forget all they have done for our community. Finally we thank our City elected officials for their continued support of our K-9 unit and entrusting us with the deployment of our four legged partners. 🐾🐾🐾

Though we pray we never witness such a moment, we trust our working dogs would receive the exact same emergency medical intervention as our human officers. Thank you to everyone who helped with this horrific incident.

Breaking:A South Toms River K-9 collapsed during a training exercise in South Toms River, the K-9 was immediately rushed to a veterinary hospital in Silverton. The K-9 was stabilized while at the hospital and intubated. A decision was made to medevac the K-9 to the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Monmouth County. The State Police sent Southstar to land at the Silver Bay Elementary School to transfer the K-9 this is a developing story and as more information becomes available we will share additional details.

Retired K9 Hunter… A little bit older, a little bit slower, but still putting in all his effort every single day. Getting old isn’t easy, especially after a lifetime of hard work, but his heart is as strong as ever. 12 years, 9 months, and still the goodest boy. 🐾💙🐾

K9 Camo and K9 Mika had a fun day at training today! 🐾

Here’s a little show-and-tell on evidence recovery. Working independently, both K9s successfully located a bullet, a pair of brass knuckles, and a set of keys that were strategically hidden throughout a half-acre grass area. As you can see the k9’s must not only locate the items which have minor human scent on them (5 seconds of holding them prior to throwing them); but they must also lay down and ‘point’ at the item with their nose. They are trained to be careful to not touch the item, so that in a real scenario they can be processed by our crime scene unit for fingerprints/dna.

These exercises help sharpen their detection skills and demonstrate just how valuable our K9 partners are when it comes to locating critical evidence.

Our K-9 Unit, City of Middletown Police Department- NY, consisting of Officer Berman & K9 Mika and Officer McDonald & K9 Camo, joined forces with our friend and colleague Deputy Burger & K9 Jett from the Orange County Sheriff's Office, New York Orange County K-9 Association for a public demonstration that was enjoyed by all.

Thank you to all the families who came out to support the event and watch our K-9 teams in action. We truly enjoyed seeing our K-9s bring smiles to the faces of children and adults alike.

We appreciate the opportunity to connect with our community and look forward to seeing everyone again at future events! 🐾🚔💙

~So sorry for the late post, your four legged friends had a very long day today and spent their saturday night at work. They are currently in contract negotiations for weekends off! 😂📝😂

K9 Camo taking a quick break to enjoy a little fun at LEGOLAND New York in between training scenarios. No matter the location, training never stops. Working in different environments exposes our canines to new sights, sounds, and challenges, helping build the confidence and adaptability needed to perform in any situation they may face in the future.

Retired K9 Hunter enjoying some snow today. Yes his daddy plowed a huge area for this old guy because the snow was too tall for his aged legs.

What may look like just play to Mika is actually a brief training session. Reinforcing obedience, control over her “release” command with the ball, and continued exposure to cold temperatures and snow.

She may be off duty today, but tomorrow she could be tasked with a long track over snowy terrain or maintaining a perimeter where her only safe cover may be on snow and ice for an extended period of time. Training in these conditions matters.

So yes, today is “play”… but don’t tell her that. Mika thinks she has the day off.
