We stopped by Sleepy Dog Books today to pick up the books for United We Read!

We hit the road with Corteva Agriscience last week to show their team the incredible work taking place across our community on two impact bus tours. Tour stops included visits to 8 of our partner agencies, including West Midland Family Center, The Legacy Center for Community Success, The Arc of Midland, Senior Services Midland, 211 Northeast Michigan, Hidden Harvest, and Family & Children's Services of Mid-Michigan. Participants got a first-hand look at the collaborations and resources that enable our neighbors and community to thrive.

Introducing the Thriving Community Experience

The Thriving Community Experience is a brand new engagement tool designed to help community members better understand the challenges facing local families – and the collective work happening to create a thriving community for all. Through the experience, participants will explore how unexpected challenges, financial pressures, and barriers to stability can quickly impact a household – and how access to the right resources and support can make a meaningful difference.

The exercise is ideal for work groups, service clubs, community groups, leadership teams and anyone wanting to gain empathy and a deeper understanding of the real-life challenges and stories of our neighbors.

Thank you to our Young Leaders United and Board of Directors for piloting the experience with us!

Each year, we honor an outstanding leader from a United Way partner agency with the Charles J. Strosacker Award for their extraordinary dedication to improving the quality of life for others in Midland County.

Today, we celebrated our 2026 honoree, Samantha McKenzie. In her role as President & CEO of Hidden Harvest, Samantha has rescued and redistributed over 32 million pounds of food to the Great Lakes Bay Region in the last 10 years. Food that helps families have healthy fresh produce, feeds neighbors visiting shelters, provides snacks for students working hard in afterschool programs, allows non-profits to put more money into serving clients, and so much more.

Samantha also serves her community as a member of the United Way Board of Directors, the Midland Noon Rotary Club, a Scout Leader, and Treasurer of the Rauchholz Memorial Library.

Join us in congratulating and thanking Samantha for making Midland County and our region a better place for our neighbors to thrive!

Help set local students up for success! Young Leaders United is partnering with Greater Midland North Family Center and Greater Midland Coleman Family Center to collect high-quality backpacks for local students for the upcoming school year.

All backpacks will be filled with school supplies and distributed in August.

The Michigan Legislature and Governor just approved $2.95 million in state funds for Michigan 211, the free-to-use service that connects Michiganders with quick, easy, and confidential help for any basic need from housing and utility assistance to food and employment resources.

Locally, this funding will help the 211 Northeast Michigan and United Way network respond to the sharp increase in ALICE households in recent years, making sure that help is there 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
