Summer is made for cookouts, lake days, music, and time with people we love. The best celebrations are centered on connection, laughter, memories, and being fully present.

Did you know that just over half of Midland County students say they share family dinners most nights in a typical week? That’s encouraging, but there’s room to grow. Sharing a meal is a chance to talk, listen, and stay connected. Research shows that kids and teens who regularly eat with their families do better in school, have stronger relationships, and make healthier choices. Challenge yourself to make more time for dinners together this summer!

‼️We have received questions about testing for cyclospora.

‼️ The Midland County Department of Public Health does not perform testing for cyclospora to diagnose cyclosporiasis.

If you're experiencing symptoms such as prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or fatigue, please contact your primary healthcare provider so they can determine whether testing is appropriate and provide a laboratory order if needed.

If you do not have a healthcare provider or are unable to be seen promptly, we encourage you to contact a local urgent care facility. If testing in needed, many local urgent care facilities can either offer testing or provide a laboratory order for testing elsewhere.

If you are experiencing severe symptoms or signs of dehydration, seek emergency medical care.

Michigan’s State Veterinarian is urging owners to monitor their pets closely amid the statewide air quality alert:

“Animals react to poor air conditions much like humans do, and certain groups—such as birds, young or older animals, and those with heart or respiratory issues—face higher risks during air quality alerts,” said State Veterinarian, Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM. “MDARD urges owners to monitor their animals for signs of coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, watery eyes, low energy, changes in how they sound, reduced appetite and reduced thirst. If you see anything concerning, contact your veterinarian.”

Keep your pets safe with these tips:

- Avoid strenuous exercise outdoors.
- Limit the amount of time pets spend outdoors.
- Keep doors and windows closed and keep fans or air conditioning units on.

Cyclosporiasis is spreading in Michigan now, especially in the Southeast, and may cause diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramping, and fatigue. Health officials are actively investigating what is causing the outbreak to give communities answers as soon as possible since many foods could be contributing to the outbreak. You may get a call from your local health department if you’ve seen a doctor with similar symptoms. Any information you choose to share is an important way to track the source and help keep our communities safe.

What health officials do know is that certain produce is more likely to be contaminated and cause sickness, including prewashed, bagged lettuce or salad mixes, raspberries, cilantro, basil, green onions, and snow peas. Cooking any produce is the safest way to decrease your risk of exposure, as washing alone may not get rid of the contamination. If you have any questions, contact your local health department for more information.
