The Independent Living philosophy postulates that people with disabilities are the best experts on their needs, and therefore they must take the initiative, individually and collectively, in designing and promoting better solutions and must organize themselves for political power. We believe that people with disabilities have the sa

me right to participation, to the same range of options, degree of freedom, control and self-determination in every day life and life projects that other citizens take for granted. Thus, we as IL activists seek the removal of infrastructure, institutional and attitudinal barriers in our communities.

Healthcare should be accessible to everyone. ♿🩺

New federal requirements are helping make that a reality. Many hospitals and medical offices are now required to provide accessible diagnostic equipment, including exam tables and weight scales, that people with disabilities can use safely and independently.

The new rules also require staff to be trained to operate accessible equipment and assist with transfers, helping remove barriers that have prevented people with disabilities from receiving equitable healthcare.

Accessible, affordable, and inclusive housing is essential to independent living — and your experiences can help shape Michigan’s next statewide housing plan.

The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) is developing Statewide Housing Plan 2.0 and is asking Michiganders to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas through the Michigan Statewide Housing Survey.

For people with disabilities, housing needs can include accessibility, affordability, transportation access, proximity to services and supports, and the ability to live independently in the community. Your perspective deserves to be part of the conversation.

For more than 25 years, the landmark Olmstead decision has helped protect the right of people with disabilities and older adults to live in their own homes and communities—not institutions.

Disability Network Mid-Michigan is joining the Michigan Olmstead Coalition in opposing a recent U.S. Department of Justice memorandum that challenges those long-standing civil rights protections.

"Every person deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, autonomy, and meaningful connections in the community they call home," said DNMM Executive Director Kelly PeLong.

People with disabilities and those with certain chronic health conditions may be at greater risk for complications from vaccine-preventable illnesses. Talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about which vaccines are recommended for you based on your age, health, and medical history.
