Midland juvenile justice center eyes new facility set to open in 2028.

Midland County is preparing now for the staffing needs of the new detention center.

Commissioners Court recently approved a new recruitment policy for detention officers, providing eligible new hires with up to $3,000 in additional compensation during their first two years of employment.

Detention officers currently start at $65,000 annually, and the Sheriff’s Office expects additional personnel will be needed as the new facility moves closer to opening.

Under the new policy, eligible detention officers can receive:

🔹 $1,000 after completing their first year
🔹 $2,000 after completing their second year

The Sheriff’s Office is working to recruit qualified applicants while also creating opportunities for employees to build long-term careers with Midland County.

We are so excited and proud to be moving forward with the construction of our new facility and look forward to the positive impact it will have on the youth we serve and our community. Thank you to everyone who has supported this exciting milestone—we can’t wait to share our progress along the way!

Midland County is finalizing the design of the new Juvenile Justice Center, a modern 42,940-square-foot facility that will increase housing capacity by approximately two-thirds and provide nearly 40% more space.

Expected to be the first new juvenile center constructed in Texas under standards adopted in 2024, the facility could serve as a model for future centers across the state. Plans include secure housing and support areas, a courtroom, counselor offices, and space for education, rehabilitation and family engagement.

Construction is currently anticipated to begin in November 2026, with completion projected for May 2028.

A huge thank you to CASA of West Texas and St. Joseph's Ministry of the Permian Basin for helping us kick start our food pantry. We all know how hard it is to keep groceries in the home during the summer, and hope this is able to take some pressure off our families.

Our mission with this pantry is to "Take what you need now, Give what you can later". We are always open to donations and also offer our kiddos the opportunity to bring in non-perishable items for community service hours.

We could not be more grateful for our community partners!
