Don't forget to keep watering your trees this winter! They may be sleeping, but they still love to drink water.

Don't forget to keep watering your trees this winter! They may be sleeping, but they still love to drink water.

Watering During Our Winter Drought

While we had great rain this summer, unfortunately, we haven't had much since. Midland is currently under a severe drought, according to the US Drought Monitor. Your trees still need water this winter, even though they may be sleeping.

Established trees need a minimum of one inch of water over the entire root zone each month according to James Tuttle , a KMB TreeKeeper member. James recommends an inch and a half be applied. He also recommends it is better to water all at one time rather than splitting up the amount watered over several days (1/2” Monday and 1/2” Thursday is the same on the water bill as 1” on Monday and it gets deeper and it doesn’t dry out as quickly).

The ‘entire root zone’ is important so if you have large trees, that could mean watering large areas. New trees (up to two year old) need 10 gallons per inch caliper twice a week spring and summer and once a week fall and winter. Weather must be considered. Trees are an investment on your property as are your plants and turf. Be certain to take care of them this winter and pray for rain.

Thank you to everyone! It was a great morning and we are looking forward to December's planting!

Give those trees some LOVE! 💞💓💞

Fall time is the perfect time to plant trees & shrubs. Roots do the majority of growing during the fall, so establish that base by continuing to water your trees. They are dormant, not dead. If you notice that your tree leaves have been yellow for the last few months, it is probably a nutrient deficiency. Now is the time for an application of those micro-nutrients. Think of it as giving your trees their yearly vitamins!

Your leaves are a great fertilizer for trees and grass!!

Leave the leaves where they lay!

Experts say raking and removing leaves can be worse for your yard – and for the planet, too. Leaving at least some of the leaves in your yard can help fertilize your grass and other plants, provide shelter for animals and even reduce emissions from landfills.

Fallen leaves can serve as a natural fertilizer for plants, David Mizejewski, a naturalist at the National Wildlife Federation, explained to USA TODAY.

“The leaves fall around the root zone of these plants, where they do things like suppress weeds or other plants from growing that that would otherwise compete with the trees and the shrubs,” he said.

“They slowly break down and compost right there at the base of the of the tree of the shrub, right above its root zone, where they return nutrients that the plant can then recycle and reuse next spring,” he said.

And mowing your lawn can break up leaves and bring nutrients to your grass. “Since they’re smaller, they're more rapidly dismantled and decomposed by microorganisms. And the whole recycling process of those nutrients being returned to the soil occurs more rapidly.

Happy Arbor Day!! If you have any tree questions, we are happy to help!

What does he plant who plants a tree?
He plants cool shade and tender rain,
And seed and bud of days to be,
And years that fade and flush again;
He plants the glory of the plain;
He plants the forest’s heritage;
The harvest of a coming age;
The joy that unborn eyes shall see—
These things he plants who plants a tree.

–Excerpt from The Heart of the Tree by Henry Cuyler Bunner (1855-1896)

Happy Arbor Day!! celebrates two Arbor Days a year - once in November for Texas Arbor Day, and once in April for National Arbor Day. We love trees and we know you do, too.

One of the popular traditions for Arbor Day is to plant a tree for a loved one. If you do, be sure to check out our Midland TreeKeepers for all of the fabulous tree tips!

Don't panic! We had a really hard week of below freezing temperatures in February. We are starting to see trees bud and bloom and bring on new life!

If your's has not yet, don't panic. Keep watering it well with a close eye. Your tree(s) might need a bit more time to recover.

It was a beautiful morning to learn about trees!!

A couple of hiccups didn't keep us down! We had our Tree Planting Seminar at the Scarborough-Lineberry House on Saturday with Midland TreeKeepers and it was a success.

We learned about the right tree for the right place, how to properly plant a tree, and when and how to prune a tree. There were tons of questions and our treekeepers were amazing at answering every one of them!

Thank you all for joining us Saturday morning!
