Late Monday night the Midland Fire Department was dispatched for a commercial structure fire with possible explosion at McKay Press.
Fire crews arrived with heavy smoke inside the building from a fire involving a compressor in the rear of the building that had spread to other materials in the area. The fire was largely contained by the building's fire sprinkler system and was quickly extinguished by fire crews on scene. All employees were accounted for and there were no injuries during the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Midland Fire Department would like to congratulate Steven Merrill on completing his probationary year. Steve is a fireman on 'A' shift, which was the same shift that his step father, Rodney, worked on before he retired.

Congratulations Steve!

Good afternoon, Midland! If you are lucky enough to be in town today, make sure you swing by 2700 Abbott St. and go see Scout. One of our city's newest entrepreneurs, Scout, has a refreshment stand in front of his house and is doing his part to help keep the city hydrated. Stop by and say hi, and wish his dog Marley a happy 2nd birthday as well!

PSA: If you see fire trucks at the overflow parking lot of Dow Diamond, there is no need to be alarmed. Every year, we test our fire hose to a standardized pressure to ensure it will withstand the rigors of our job and requirements.

Today, B shift is testing their assigned hoses. Each shift is assigned 1/3 of the hose to test and record; this is another example of one more additional responsibility we are tasked with during our 24 shift.

PUB-ED ALERT:
Each month, educators from our Fire Prevention Division visit Kindergarten and 1st Grade classrooms to teach age-appropriate fire safety topics that help build lifelong safety habits. In March, the Fire Prevention Division hosted a Reading Month Challenge across participating schools to encourage reading and learning among our youngest students. Students competed to see which class could read the most books during March Reading Month, with the winning class from each grade earning a pizza party with the Fire Marshal. We are incredibly proud to share that across 3 participating schools, students read an impressive total of 5,371 books during the month of March.
The Midland Fire Department takes great pride in supporting Midland Public Schools in a way that not only educates, but also invests in the future success and safety of the next generation. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue building positive relationships with our community’s students, teachers, and families.

May is a lot of things, but one of the most important is Mental Health Awareness Month. Over the years, mental health has been talked about more and more. It is a very important (and hard) topic to bring up, but don't be afraid to check in on your friends, family, or others who are important in your life. Even a quick, 'How are you?' or 'You good, bro?' is a good way to be present in the lives of those who are important to you. Sometimes, being present is the best thing you can do.

We are grateful for the working relationship that we have between private, local, and State agencies.
