National Su***de Prevention Month: First Action, Raising Awareness

September is National Su***de Prevention Month—a time to focus on being united in raising awareness, encouraging conversations, and reminding those who may be struggling that they are not alone.

At United Relief Foundation, we believe awareness is the first meaningful action in su***de prevention.

Raising awareness begins with the simple act of sharing information—helping others recognize the signs that someone may be struggling and creating a culture where people feel comfortable talking about emotional challenges and asking for help.

Too often, people experiencing a crisis suffer in silence. They may worry about being judged, misunderstood, or perceived as weak.

For veterans and active‑duty servicemembers, the expectation to remain strong and resilient can make it especially difficult to acknowledge when they are struggling or to reach out for support.

On July 17, two U.S. service members were killed in action in Jordan as U.S. Central Command and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. A third American remains missing in action.

These are the first U.S. military deaths in this conflict since March. Four more service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals and have since been discharged. Others assessed for minor injuries have returned to duty.

Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM is withholding the identities of the fallen until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified. So tonight we don’t yet know their names. We don’t know their units, their hometowns, the people waiting for them. But somewhere in America, two families are about to receive the knock on the door that every military family fears, and a third is holding onto hope for a son or daughter still unaccounted for.

They stood their post under fire, on foreign soil, defending against incoming missiles and drones so that others would live. That’s the job. That’s always been the job. Most of the country will scroll past this news between other headlines, never knowing what these men and women gave, or that they gave it at all.

We will say their names when the time comes. Until then, we hold the line of remembrance, and we pray for the one still out there and for the families now stepping into the hardest chapter of their lives.
