Cooler temps are coming (eventually!), which means your heating system will run more to keep your home comfortable this winter.

Fall is the perfect time to check for drafts around windows and doors, before cooler weather arrives. A little weatherstripping and caulk can help keep conditioned air indoors while improving efficiency and overall comfort. 🍂

Coastal Electric director John Woods III captured this amazing camera phone picture this morning, just after 6:33 am, from his home on Colonels Island in Liberty County. The SpaceX mission used a Falcon 9 rocket to propel a Cargo Dragon capsule into orbit. The Dragon capsule is carrying approximately 6,300 pounds of supplies, critical hardware, and science experiments bound for the International Space Station. Because the pre-dawn liftoff occurred just before sunrise, high-altitude sunlight illuminated the expanding rocket exhaust, creating a stunning, glowing space jellyfish effect visible to skywatchers across Florida and the Southeast.

Where were you 10 years ago today?

If you lived in Coastal Georgia on Oct. 7, 2016, you were most likely far from home after heeding the evacuation order or hunkered down, weathering a very dark and stormy night.

That’s because 10 years ago today, Hurricane Matthew moved through our area, downing trees, flooding roads, caving in roofs and knocking out power to 96% of Coastal Electric Cooperative’s members.

The storm caused $1.9 million in damages. Within the first two hours of assessment, crews had already counted 100 broken poles. In all, 17,223 of our 18,002 metered accounts were without power.

But as a co-op and as a community, we rallied.

With a quick response from Coastal Electric Cooperative employees, first responders, neighbors helping neighbors and crews called in from other areas, we restored power to 50% of the outages within the first 24 hours and 75% within the first 48.

These photos (from a slideshow made for our employees after the storm) remind us of the exhaustion, the determination and, ultimately, the pride we felt in the days after Matthew. And they’re one more example of why we’re so thankful to serve our friends and neighbors right here at home. 💙

RIP to the bird who got a little reckless this morning and made contact with a power line, causing the outage in Shellman. Our condolences to his feathered friends.

We appreciate the quick work of linemen Hunter Hawkins and Trent Lyda to restore power a little after 7:30.

Outage restored!

A big “thank you” to Linemen Jacob Blakewood, Gabe Gale and Adam Jarrard for working in the rain to restore power!

As this rain softens the soil and weighs down tree limbs, we may see many more of these types of outages over the next few days. But rain or shine, we’ll be ready to respond if outages occur.

Did you know there are co-ops for just about everything? 👀

It's National Co-op Month, so we're kicking things off with a little co-op trivia! (Don't mind us while we nerd out 🤓.) Cooperatives come in all shapes and sizes, but they have one important thing in common: They're owned by the people they serve.

How many of these kinds of co-ops have you come across?
🛒 Consumer co-ops: Owned by the people who use the products or services
🌾 Producer co-ops: Help farmers, ranchers and other producers work together
⚡ Utility co-ops: Provide essential services like electricity, broadband and water (That's us!)
👷‍♂️ Worker co-ops: Owned and operated by the people who work there
🏡 Housing co-ops: Give residents a role in owning and managing their housing
🏪 Retail co-ops: Member-owned businesses where members shop and help support the business
💳 Financial co-ops: Member-owned financial institutions, such as credit unions

Co-ops may look a little different depending on the services they offer, but one characteristic is true for all -- co-ops exist to serve their members. 🤝
