The Mifflinburg Hose Company No. 1 is located in Mifflinburg, a Borough of approximately 3,500 people in Union County, Pennsylvania. We serve a total population of about 18,000 people residing in almost 290 square miles of rural central Pennsylvania. Apparatus is located at our Headquarters Station in downtown Mifflinburg; as well as the village of Mazeppa, Buffalo Township. At first glance, the p

opulation served seems small, but when you add in the fact that those people are scattered over what amounts to almost half of Union County, including the Boroughs of Mifflinburg and Hartleton and the Townships of Buffalo, Hartley, Limestone, Lewis and West Buffalo, response time takes on a new meaning. Our apparatus include three engines (2 Sutphen & a Simon Duplex), a Sutphen Heavy Rescue, a Sutphen 70ft.+ aerial platform, a Utility, and a brush truck owned by Nittany Wildland Firefighters is stationed at Mazeppa. Winter State Park and numerous other smaller state parks and natural areas. Our coverage area includes parts of the Appalachian Mountains and some of the roughest terrain in the Mid-Atlantic area. We also boast some of the most scenic farming valleys in the United States. Housing stock varies from 18th century farm homes to modern two story housing. Although we have our share of structure fires, we respond to silo fires, vehicle accidents, farm accidents, search and rescue and wildfires.

*5/31/2026* Just after 2000 hours, the MHC was dispatched to Spring Township on the 10-3 box for a reported outside fire with extension into the house. Capt 10-4 arrived to smoke showing from the residence, for a gas grill that had caught fire next to the structure. First arriving crews were quick to knock it & Tower 3 was placed in service prior to arriving.

*5/29/26* Around 0900 this morning, the MHC was dispatched to Lewis Township, at the intersection of Cooper MILL Rd & Buffalo Rd for a motorcycle accident. Chief 301 arrived & found one biker down with an ankle injury. The box was held to EMS & patient was transported to local medical facility.

*5/29/26* Just before 0400 hours, the MHC was dispatched to Lewis Township, on the 14400 block of Old Turnpike Rd (SR45) for an auto accident with entrapment. Chief 301 & 302 arrived to find one vehicle underneath a Semi Trailer & requested an additional Rescue to the scene. Rescue 3 arrived and stabilized the trailer & then began extricating the patient. Engine 3-2 arrived & were ordered to pull a hand-line for precaution. Rescue 7 arrived & moved their manpower forward to assist Rescue 3 crew. Patient was extricated & transported to local medical facility with minor injuries. Crews remained on scene for approximately hour & half before returning available.
