🚨 SLOW DOWN, MILAN! SPEEDING CATCHES UP WITH YOU. 🚨

Tomorrow, law enforcement agencies across Illinois are participating in Speed Awareness Day, bringing attention to the dangers of speeding and encouraging everyone to make safe choices behind the wheel.

In 2024, speeding was a factor in:
🏎️ 31.1% of all crashes in Illinois
🚑 35.2% of injury crashes
💔 45.3% of fatal crashes

In Illinois, 423 people lost their lives in speed-related crashes in 2024. More than 80% of those fatalities occurred on non-Interstate roadways where the posted speed limit was 55 mph or less.

Speeding doesn't just mean exceeding the posted speed limit. Driving too fast for road, weather, or traffic conditions can also put everyone at risk. Speeding can:
➡️ Increase the distance it takes to stop
➡️ Reduce your ability to react to hazards
➡️ Make it harder to safely navigate curves or avoid obstacles
➡️ Increase the risk of serious injury or death in a crash

As we head into the summer months, please remember to slow down and stay alert, especially in school zones, residential neighborhoods, construction and maintenance zones, and on secondary roads.

Posted speed limits are there for a reason—to protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and everyone who shares our roads.

Drive smart: Reduce your speed for safer travel

[Milan, IL] – Today, the Milan Police Department announced it is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to step up enforcement efforts across the state in an effort to reduce speeding. Throughout the month of July, motorists can expect increased patrols looking for speeding, as well as other traffic violations.

Speeding causes unnecessary danger on our roads and speed greatly reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around another vehicle, a hazardous object or an unexpected curve. Speeding drivers put themselves, their passengers, and other motorists at tremendous risk.

During the speeding enforcement blitz, officers will intensify enforcement of posted speed limits.

Offenders will be stopped and ticketed – especially on the Rock Island-Milan Parkway, Route 67, Veterans Memorial Bridge, West 4th Street, and East 1st Avenue, where most of our speed-related crashes occur. Our goal is to save lives!

The speed enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.

Milan Police Department Releases Fourth of July enforcement statistics

(Milan, Illinois) – The Milan Police Department made (1) impaired driving arrest and issued (5) seat belt citations during the recent Fourth of July Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket safety campaigns.

Other citations issued included (36) speeding citations, (14) distracted driving citations, and (33) citations for other enforcement.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Illinois participated in this statewide effort to get drunk and drugged drivers off our roads and encourage seat belt use.

Milan Police Department joined forces with more than 200 other state and local law enforcement agencies conducting the crackdown, which featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities including a media campaign.

The Illinois Independence Day enforcement campaign is funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies across the state. It’s reinforced with IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign, which shares real stories of Illinois residents lost in fatal crashes.

Quad Cities Law Enforcement Agencies Remind Residents About Fireworks Laws and Independence Day Safety
The law enforcement agencies of the Illinois Quad Cities are reminding residents to celebrate Independence Day safely and responsibly. While fireworks are often associated with holiday celebrations, the use of illegal fireworks continues to cause serious injuries, property damage, and fires each year. Fireworks can also create significant disturbances for neighbors, frighten pets, and negatively affect military veterans and others who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Residents are reminded that Illinois law generally prohibits the possession and use of consumer fireworks. Under the Illinois Pyrotechnic Use Act (425 ILCS 35), consumer fireworks may only be used as part of an approved public display conducted under permits issued through the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.
Examples of fireworks that are prohibited for personal use in Illinois include: Firecrackers, Bottle rockets, Roman candles, Cherry bombs, M-80s and similar explosive devices.
Illinois law does permit certain “novelty” items, including sparklers, smoke devices, party poppers, snakes, and other novelty effects that meet statutory requirements.
In addition to state law, many Illinois municipalities have local ordinances that further restrict or prohibit the possession, sale, and use of fireworks. Violations of local ordinances may result in fines or other enforcement action such as confiscation of illegal fireworks.
We want everyone to enjoy a safe and memorable Independence Day holiday. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professionally conducted public display including in: Coal Valley on 6/27, Moline on 7/2, East Moline on 7/3, Red, White and Boom in Rock Island on 7/3 and Bettendorf on 7/4.
Residents are encouraged to report emergencies by calling 911. Non-emergency fireworks complaints should be directed to the appropriate local law enforcement agency's non-emergency number.

SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

On Wednesday, June 10th, 2026, at approximately 10:22 P.M., officers responded to a shot’s fired call at the Milan Manor Apartment Complex, 2000 West 4th Street, Milan, after receiving several 911 calls. Upon arrival, officers learned that a group of subjects had fired multiple shots towards an apartment building resulting in a large crime scene.

Officers requested the assistance of the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit. There have been no injuries reported at this time and no arrests have been made. We do believe this is an isolated incident and there is no current threat to the public. Officers are working diligently collecting and processing evidence. We ask the community to provide any information you have that might assist us in locating the subjects responsible for this senseless act.

In 2023, law enforcement leaders throughout the Quad Cities and the leaders of the Rock Island County NAACP adopted the “10 Shared Principles,” a commitment focused on strengthening trust, transparency, accountability, and positive relationships between police departments and the communities they serve. With several new Chiefs of Police now serving agencies across the county, local law enforcement leaders joined the NAACP on May 20, 2026 to reaffirm that commitment by re-signing the 10 Shared Principles.

These principles emphasize fairness, respect, communication, de-escalation, procedural justice, mutual responsibility and continued community engagement.

The Milan Police Department is proud to stand alongside neighboring agencies and community leaders in reaffirming our dedication to professional, compassionate, and community-focused policing.
