Grant Funding Available for Project Prom, Graduation Lock-in Events

HANNIBAL – The Northeast Coalition for Roadway Safety is offering grant funding to local schools that hold student lock-in events for Project Prom or high school graduation. Eligibility requirements include hosting a presentation or activity educating students on highway safety issues. There are many highway safety programs available at no cost to schools. A complete list can be found on the resource flyer posted on the Northeast Coalition for Roadway Safety website. Qualifying schools will receive $200 each to assist with event expenses such as location rental, food or entertainment which will be paid directly to the school.
“These supervised events are a way for students to safely enjoy their special event with friends,” stated Northeast District Traffic Engineer Jonathan Bruner. "Impaired or distracted driving can have devastating consequences, changing lives in a matter of seconds. We want these students to have positive and lasting memories of these important occasions, not tragedies."
The Northeast Coalition will be accepting grant applications now through Feb. 21, 2025. Interested schools and/or their sponsors can submit the online grant application by visiting Project Prom-Graduation Grant | Missouri Department of Transportation (modot.org). Funding is available for up to 20 local schools.
For additional information, contact Northeast Coalition Facilitator Gerri Jeffries at (573) 248-2502 or Northeast Coalition Representative Tina Lee at (573) 248-2517, or visit the Northeast Coalition’s website at: www.savemolives.com/mcrs/Northeast-Region.

Resurfacing and sidewalk improvements beginning soon in Daviess and Grundy counties

TRENTON, Mo. – A project to resurface, improve shoulders, and rehabilitate sidewalks on Route 6 from Interstate 35 in Daviess County to the Muddy Creek Bridge east of Trenton is set to begin soon.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has contracted with Emery Sapp & Sons, Inc. to complete the project. The sidewalk rehabilitation portion of the work is to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Crews plan to begin on May 7, 2020, on the east end of the project with the relocation of water lines. This work will require the removal of sidewalks, moving the water line, and replacing the sidewalk in various locations, mainly east of the railroad bridge.
For the water line replacement and other sidewalk work, crews will move block-by- block westward until this phase of the project is completed. Property owners and residents will be provided at least 24-hours’ notice and will have access to their property at all times during the work, but some lane closures and turning restrictions may be necessary. Some side road closures may also be necessary. At least two days’ notice will be given for any side road closures and each closure is expected to last one day or less.
After the sidewalk portion of the project is complete, crews will resurface Route 6 within the project limits. The exact schedule and direction of the resurfacing work has not been determined at this time. During resurfacing, Route 6 will be narrowed to one lane and a pilot car and flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone.
All work is weather-permitting and schedules are subject to change. Motorists are urged to stay alert and pay attention to all roadway signing and barricades and to eliminate distractions. Motorists are encouraged to use caution during the project, as crews will be working in close proximity to the traveling public. Please remember that all work zones are NO PHONE zones. Buckle up. Phone down. Arrive Alive.

Route 129 in Putnam County resurfacing to begin next week

UNIONVILLE, Mo. – A resurfacing project on Route 129 is scheduled to begin next week. The Missouri Department of Transportation has contracted with W.L. Miller Company to complete the resurfacing project from the Iowa state line to U.S. Route 136 east of Unionville.
The contractor plans to begin the week of May 4, 2020, at the Iowa state line and pave both the northbound and southbound lanes to U.S. Route 136. They will progress south in 2-mile sections with one lane direction closed at a time. A pilot car and flaggers will direct motorists around the lane closures. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place for the duration of the project.
During daylight hours, Monday through Friday, crews will be on-site and the work zone will be active. Some work may occur on Saturdays, if necessary, to complete the project on schedule. All work should be complete by mid-June 2020.
Signs will be in place alerting motorists of the work and planned lane closures. All work is weather permitting and could be rescheduled.
MoDOT encourages all travelers to slow down, especially in work zones, as there will be large equipment and workers near the driving lanes. As always, please buckle up, eliminate distractions, pay attention and drive safely so everyone is able to Arrive Alive.
