On May 1st 2019 at about 1445 hours. Units were dispatched to a structure fire on the corner Uranium and Yokum. When crews arrived on scene heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the duplex apartment complex and an adjacent shed in a yard behind the apartments. The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes. The apartment complex and shed were a complete loss. A car parked near the complex was also damaged by radiant heat. No injuries to occupants or fire personnel on scene.

This fire was cause by Negligent Arson. Fire investigators with the State Fire Marshals Office along with local Fire Investigators arrived on scene to assist the Milan Police Dept with a fire investigation.

After about 10 hours into the investigation Agent Noriega from the Milan Police Department obtained an arrest warrant for Melissa Chavez 37 years of age, charging her with one count of Negligent Arson (recklessly starting a fire resulting in property damage)

Melissa Chavez was taken into custody in the early morning hours of May 2, 2019 and booked into the Cibola County Detention Center without incident.

Great job to all agencies, Dispatch, Cibola County Sheriffs, Cibola County Fire Marshal, Continual Divide Electric Inc. PNM Gas, Local Red Cross (Sarah Austin). A big thank you to the Grans Fire and Superior Ambulance and the Village of Milan Fire Dept and the State Fire Marshal. Without the help of all the above this could have been so much worse then what it already was.

We all may were different uniforms but we all share the same drive of saving lives and protecting our communities.

The Village of Milan Police Dept. thanks you all for your hard work and dedication. Without all of you we are nothing, together we are stronger and it shows.

Assisted Red Cross today at Milan Elementary school in emergency preparedness to the students. Ms Paige and Ms Vickie talked to students about what kind of disasters that could happen in our area and in preparation they dispersed a Red Cross pillow case so students could put pre-prepared items in it (hygiene products, a toy, H20, nonperishable food, books, writing tablet and pen, etc.) So in case of an evacuation they grab their pillow case and leave the home( with parents or guardian of course) and seek safety or shelter. Thank you Red Cross Ms Paige and Ms Vickie!

We were invited to assist Milan Elementary School honor their top readers. These students were able to meet their AR Reading goals for the year for score of 80%. In honor of this achievement they lit miniature hot air balloons (lanterns) and watched them fly. Weather conditions were very favorable this morning to allow this event to take place. Great job teachers and students of Milan Elementary!! Milan PD, Superior Ambulance, Milan Code Enforcer, and Milan Fire.

This would be why Milan Fire will not be issuing burn permits. It is too dangerous.

Employees with the 911 center in Cibola County, Cibola Regional Communications Center, created ribbons to bring Suicide Prevention and Awareness to our community following the tragic event that impacted everyone on February 1st, 2019. These ribbons have been placed at all the public schools within Cibola County, St. Teresa School, Future Foundations and on trees along Santa Fe Ave.

The 911 center would like to express to everyone in Cibola County that we as 911 dispatchers are here to talk to you, a friend, a family member, anyone in need or in crisis. Also know that we can connect you with other resources that can assist you. A Firefighter, Law Enforcement Officer, EMS personnel, Suicide Prevention Llifeline, or we will reach out to ANYONE that you feel comfortable talking to.
