It is time for our annual, friendly reminder of the city ordinance in relation to fireworks and 4th of July safety. We have received questions, and some complaints, as we get closer to the weekend.

📜Per city ordinance:

9.48.010 Fi****ms and Fireworks Prohibited.
It is unlawful for any person to, within the corporate limits of the city, or within one mile of said corporate limits, discharge or shoot off any pistol, gun or any other firearm or discharge any firecracker, rocket, bomb or any other piece of fireworks of any type or character. (Ord. 226, Sec. 2, 1948).

The 4th of July, and time leading up to the holiday, is a time of great celebration of our country. However, there are several reasons why the ordinance is in effect. Please consider the following:

💣 For a variety of reasons, some citizens and neighbors do not like the loud booms and crackling that fireworks can create. Please be respectful of all residents and visitors.

🧨 What goes up, must come down. This, of course, can be dependent on the type of firework or firecracker being set off. Fireworks of any character can cause a fire hazard to residences, trees, and other vegetation within the community.

🎆 If you do not have a location to set fireworks off, or simply prefer to spectate, be sure to head out to Lake Farley Park at dusk on July 4th for the fireworks show.

Also, if your celebration includes consuming alcoholic beverages, please plan ahead and designate a sober driver. Law enforcement agencies across the state will have increased enforcement efforts with the goal of keeping motorists safe.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please call the police department at 605-432-5650. We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend!
