Miles City Police Department

Miles City Police Department The Miles City Police Department provides law enforcement services to the Miles City community. Therefore, we are unable to fulfill those requests.

REQUEST FOR PATCHES: Over the past few months, we’ve been receiving an ever-increasing number of requests for the embroidered patches we wear on our uniforms and hats. Unfortunately, our budget constraints do not allow us to purchase extras of these two rather costly items. If this changes, we will certainly announce the availability of these items.

May was a busy month for the Miles City Police Department. As expected, Bucking Horse Sale brought a noticeable increase in calls, traffic, and public safety activity throughout the community.

During large events, our focus remains the same: responding quickly, being visible and available, and working with our community and partner agencies to help keep things running safely.

We appreciate the patience, cooperation, and support shown by residents, visitors, and local organizations throughout the month. Thank you for helping make May a safe and successful month for Miles City.

If you see someone going door-to-door (in a red passenger car) around Miles City for the next couple weeks that’s Kaidi Ly Bookgirl! She’s a university student from Estonia, Europe, here on a summer exchange program. Kaidi is visiting families to share educational books and apps — helping kids from toddlers all the way to college prep. She’s the real deal with an approved business license through the city of Miles City. If you spot her, be sure to give her a friendly hello!

We have heard concerns from the community regarding our response to a bear incident yesterday, 05/22/2026. To provide additional context, we are sharing a patrol vehicle dash camera clip related to the single shot an officer fired at the bear.

Due to an influx of bystanders in the area, officers responded with emergency lights in an attempt to move the bear away from populated areas for the safety of both the public and the animal.

In the video, a citizen walking in the area is circled in red. Due to the close proximity between the individual and the bear, an officer fired a single shot causing it to flee the area.

No one was injured during this incident, and law enforcement was ultimately able to move the bear away from town safely.

Our goal is always to protect both the public and wildlife whenever possible. Officers are often required to make immediate decisions in rapidly evolving situations to protect the safety of the community.

We appreciate the assistance of our partner agencies, and the public during this incident. We urge the public to stay away from potentially dangerous wildlife, if a bear or similar animal is spotted, please call South Eastern MT Dispatch. We also think bears are really cool creatures and understand wanting to take a look. However, an influx of people significantly complicates the law enforcement response in such situations.

SWATTING INCIDENT
On 05/11/2026 at approximately 12:27 officers were dispatched to a report of shots fired inside of the 600 Cafe. The caller was reported to have been hiding inside the bathroom. Officers responded and secured the area. Officers and South Eastern MT Dispatch worked together and quickly determined this call to be unfounded. These false 911 calls, often referred to as "SWATTING" incidents, are detrimental to public safety resources. Miles City Police will be investigating the source of this call. It is a criminal offense to make such false reports.

Behind every number is a call for service, a conversation, or a situation where someone needed help. April's statistics highlight the work being done across Miles City, but they’re only part of the bigger picture.

Our officers continue to stay proactive, respond when needed, and work alongside the community to address concerns and keep neighborhoods safe. None of this is possible without the support we receive from residents and our partner agencies.

We appreciate your continued trust and cooperation.
