On May 5, 2026, the Souhegan Valley region experienced a significantly higher than normal call volume as multiple multi-alarm brush fire events occurred across the area, creating a strain on available resources.
High winds combined with sunny, dry weather created ideal conditions for rapid brush fire spread and increased the demand for emergency response throughout the region.
Thanks to a coordinated effort and strong situational awareness among the region’s Communications Centers, the appropriate apparatus and resources were dispatched or diverted from other, lesser-priority assignments to mitigate all active incidents safely and effectively.

During the peak operational period, the on-duty team at Milford Area Communications Center processed a total of 77 incidents between 12:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

The Milford Area Communications Center extends its appreciation to all Communications Center and responding fire, EMS, and public safety partners for their professionalism and collaboration during this high-demand period.

This week, we proudly recognize the start of National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, a time dedicated to honoring the calm voices in moments of chaos and an indispensable part of the first responder community.

Our telecommunicators serve as the first point of contact for the public when they are in urgent need, often on what may be the worst day of their lives. Our teams professionalism, compassion, critical thinking, and composure under pressure sets the tone for every response that follows.

Long before help arrives on scene, telecommunicators all across our nation are hard at work doing their part to save lives and protect the safety of our colleagues operating in the streets.
