It looks like our Tuesday morning could be interesting. Any loose items outside should be put away or brought inside. Hopefully we miss the winds and damaging weather but get a nice rain instead 🤞.

9:56 PM Monday August 10, 2026: We're watching isolated storms currently over northwestern South Dakota that are expected to gradually grow into a line as it moves southeast. Here's the latest look at timing for our area.

Ping pong ball sized hail will be possible with these storms mainly near and west of the James River, but the greater concern will be damaging wind gusts to 70+ mph as storms move towards I-29 by the early morning hours.

Not everyone gets a storm, but remain weather aware tonight!

Milford’s 1925 Stoughton Fire Engine was in operation at the Spencer Fire.

DID YOU KNOW . . . it was 102 degrees Fahrenheit with a hot summer wind blowing from the southwest when Spencer Main Street ignited? Bjornstad Drug had a 40-foot long table filled with fireworks in 1931 - the largest cache they'd ever offered for sale, valued at more than $300. The boys who allegedly / accidentally set the fire were in awe of the fireworks laying before them. There is some historic confusion on how things actually went down and who did what. Yet eye witness reports say high winds stoked the flames and an entire block burned within 15 minutes! Complicating the battle against the flames, fireworks were whizzing and whirling all over the place, too. One firefighter was injured by a rocket.

AND did you also know . . . that other communities in Clay County have faced off with fire within the last 100+ years? Webb suffered TWO ruinous fires on separate occasions, burning both sides of Main Street. Cornell also experienced a devastating fire when suspected foul play ignited the roller rink and additional businesses and homes were destroyed in the process.

There's more. . .

During Spencer's conflagration, many fire departments from surrounding communities AND counties came to the rescue. Spencer's fire spurned many important changes within the state and national fire-fighting world, including adaptation for universal hoses and couplings. Oh, and there was that pesky 86-year moratorium on fireworks in Iowa that was brought upon the people because of Spencer's fire! 😳 The ban was lifted in 2017.

Let's give three cheers for the firefighters of yesterday and today who continue to provide this vital service within Clay County!

These historic details and much more will be included in the Clay County 175th Anniversary Exhibit, set to open August 26 at The Heritage Center.
