In honor of Giving Tuesday, we’re once again donating 15 of our digital billboards to the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation for a full week, helping expand the reach of their text-a-thon campaign. Our goal is to support their mission of raising awareness and encouraging donations for the Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp, a free, life-changing camp for kids ages 8 to 17 from around the world who have survived serious burn injuries. Thank you to the CT Burns Care Foundation for the incredible work you do for our community and far beyond! 🎁💙

The Joe Hickey Fire Service Award honors a firefighter or firefighter burn foundation who provides assistance to burn survivors, demonstrates a commitment to improving burn care through every phase of recovery, and works to carry on the mission of the Phoenix Society and the local burn community. The Phoenix Society serves burn survivors, loved ones, burn care professionals, researchers, and all those dedicated to empowering the burn community and building a safer world.

This year, we are proud to announce one of our very own has been recognized for the Joe Hickey Award. Congratulations to Steve Luppinacci!!

Steve joined the Stratford Fire Department in 1987, serving 26 years in fire suppression, search and rescue, hazmat, and medical response before retiring in 2013. He is a dedicated member of IAFF Local 988 and the Stratford Professional Burn Foundation. Steve joined the Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp in 1993 and later became our camp director. His passion extends far beyond our camp, as he continues to work with multiple foundations to ensure burn survivors feel supported, comfortable, and loved- regardless of their injuries.

Thank you, Steve, for your years of dedication, compassion, and outstanding service to the burn community. Your impact is immeasurable.

On August 16th, counselors, staff, and loved ones celebrated our new forever home at Camp Trexler in the Pocono Mountains🏕️

This incredible gift was made possible through the generosity of Ray & Terry Bentley and the Where Angels Play Foundation. The foundation was born out of two powerful inspirations: the spirit of the Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp — founded by the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation — which inspired Bill Lavin to create the Where Angels Play Foundation, and the desire to honor the lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School by building playgrounds that bring joy and hope to communities in need. Since then, Where Angels Play has built playgrounds across the country and around the world, creating spaces of love, healing, and remembrance.

It’s truly a full-circle story — the Burn Camp, helped inspire the creation of the Where Angels Play Foundation, and now that same foundation is giving new life to the Burn Camp.

Bill Lavin, founder of Where Angels Play Foundation, shared these heartfelt words with alumni campers (now counselors) who continue to carry the spirit forward:

“In reality, and without exaggeration, burn survivors — past and present — who have battled injury, infection, social challenges, and persevered through it all are the main reason this dream continues. When asked what organization is responsible for this new home and move, the answer is ultimately the organization of burn survivors — or rather, Thrivers.

Congratulations! Not to me or to any foundation, but to the indomitable spirit of the tiniest survivor, who teaches what a true hero looks like. I take no credit for this, except that I was blessed to witness courage and perseverance. The campers should be taking a bow — no one else.”

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all foundations and everyone involved in making this new home a reality, and to all who have been working tirelessly to prepare the camp for summer 2026. We also give a huge thank you to all the campers — past, present, and future — for bringing their energy and courage each year. And to all the families who trust us with their children to be a part of our camp family, your support means the world❤️

As another incredible summer draws to a close, we want to say thank you—from the bottom of our hearts—to every camper, counselor, and staff member who made the camp week so special. You brought courage to your activities, laughter to the campfires, and kindness to every corner of our woods.

We love you. We miss you already. And we truly cannot wait to welcome you back next year for more memories. Camp isn’t just a place—it’s the people.

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” – A.A. Milne

Until next summer, carry the spirit of camp with you throughout the year… sing loud, laugh often, and never forget that you are part of a family that stretches far beyond these woods.
