💜 Today Mayor Smith, the Milford Health and Human Services Department, Milford Police Department, Milford Youth and Family Services, Milford Public Schools, Milford Prevention Council, Bridges Healthcare, local and state officials, community members, and more stood in unity on City Hall’s steps to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. This year marks 25 years of global remembrance and the continued need for action.

Every life lost to overdose is a profound tragedy. Behind every statistic is a real person — someone loved, valued, and missed by their family, friends, coworkers, and community. While this day of awareness is still needed, it doesn’t have to be forever. Together we can continue to work together to create supportive pathways to recovery, we can make a difference, and we can help save lives.

Tonight, Milford City Hall will be illuminated in purple to remind us to pause and remember those in our community who have lost loved ones and to show our support for everyone touched by substance use. 💜

🏫📚Mayor Smith joined Dr. Cutaia for Milford Public Schools 2026 Convocation. Teachers, staff, administrators, city department employees, elected officials, and more all in one space - buzzing with excitement, a touch of nervous energy, and a readiness to begin a new school year.

Mayor Smith shared the 2023 Convocation was a highlight of his time in office then and how this year he looked forward to participating once again. He knew he felt this way because he would be among kindred spirits, that he would be in a room full of people that he respects and admires – whose work is indeed noble.

He offered sincere gratitude to all the teachers and the whole team who will leave their mark on the students far beyond the day-to-day lessons in the classroom. Mayor Smith went on to say – "students remember the teacher who believed in them when they didn’t believe in themselves, the teacher who challenged them, the teacher who gave them another chance, the teacher who made them feel like they mattered and the list goes on – we are counting on you and know you will leave that imprint."

On Saturday, Milford Public Library (57 New Haven Ave) turns into a fun mini golf course woven through the library bookshelves with daytime and evening hours of play. Guests will enjoy a relaxed round with friends or family while seeing the library in a whole new way. In addition, guests can take a chance on a selection of raffle baskets or bid on silent auction prizes.

🏫Mayor Smith and Dr. Anna Cutaia, Superintendent of Schools, welcomed a room full of new Milford Public Schools educators!! The room was buzzing with positive energy and a touch of nervous excitement.

Both Dr. Cutaia and Mayor Smith spoke of their beginnings and shared their inspirational personal educational stories. Mayor Smith reflected how life is not about accumulating material wealth – it’s about kindness and it’s about leaving the world better than we found it. He acknowledged that this group’s educational career will leave the world better and their meaningful impact on students’ lives will last far beyond today.

Thank you all for choosing to be a Milford teacher and to make a difference in Milford!

👏A “Knight in Tuscany” Honoring Gordon “Butch” Parmelee – An Accomplished Milford Resident with an Extraordinary Kind and Giving Spirit! 👏

Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 14546 held a ceremony at Great River to recognize and celebrate Butch for his caring heart. There were unlimited stories told of Butch’s selflessness and his impact to the community.

Mayor Smith honored Butch best when he offered the following message…. the true beauty of a genuinely giving heart is one that gives without ever expecting anything in return-and that quite simply put - is Butch. Mayor Smith shared his belief of the importance to live a life that leaves the world a little better than you found it and he sincerely applauded Butch for being able to rest his head on his pillow every night knowing he has been doing that his whole life - our world is better because of Butch.

What a remarkable treasure we have in our local community!
