Good Morning Friends,
I'm sorry we have been so quiet for the last year. It's been an incredibly hard year for our family. We lost not only Wanda but also her Grandson Mark (who was my brother) 6 months after he returned home from Iraq. We had been hoping to have a booth at the Oyster festival this year, but unfortunately we just aren't able to this year. Our plan now is to bring Wanda's Sugar Shack back to the Milford Green for the 2015 Oyster festival and hopefully every year after. We do have a special request for you all today though...Today would have been Wanda's 93rd birthday and in honor of her we ask that you please take a moment to have something sweet with a friend or loved one and smile....

Dear friends, we'd like to take a moment to thank each of you who took a second to offer condolences, share a memory or photo, or join us at Wanda's services. The outpouring of love and support has been tremendous. It is comforting to know how adored Wanda and the Sugar Shack are by all of you. The shear number of comments, shares, views on this page are just staggering. It may take a little time to get things together but I'd like to let you know that one day, hopefully sooner rather than later, we WILL be bringing Wanda's Sugar Shack back to the Milford Green. Wanda's legacy is the torch we as her family MUST carry forward so that future generations will know the sweetness of Wanda and the Shack. Stay faithful, be kind to one another, smile, laugh, love, and you will be first to know when you can come in and fill a basket of future memories. Wanda loves you all and so do we.

Wanda Rose Hornack, 91, resident of Milford, wife to the late Steve Hornack, entered into eternal rest at home surrounded by her family on July 14, 2013. She was born on August 6, 1921 in Shenendoah, PA to the late Sophie and Anthony Gursky.

Wanda migrated to Milford in 1952 and took up residence in the Milford Lawns area of town and was employed by WT Grant. Then on June 22, 1972 she embarked on her childhood dream and opened Wanda’s Sugar Shack, which allowed her to leave her legacy of bringing sweet smiles to Milford for the last 41 years.

Wanda is survived by her children Carole Ann Beers and her husband Mark and Michael Hornack and his wife Cindy; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Wanda was predeceased by her daughter, Nancy Borzenski, her sister and brother-in-law Theresa and Joseph Wynowski as well as her bothers Anthony and Joseph Gurksy.

Friends and family may call on Wednesday, July 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 pm at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford, CT 06460. Burial will be private. It has come to our attention that there is some confusion as to when the services are for Wanda. There was an error in the New Haven Register's story yesterday about the services being tonight. We notified them and asked that they print a correction, but unfortunately they didn't. We apologize to anyone who made the effort to go down to Cody-White to pay their respects to Wanda. The correct services information is:

Again, we are so sorry to those of you who made a trip there.

Dear friends,
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we must inform you that Wanda passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter and son in-law last night. We, her family, would like to express our gratitude to all of you for your love and support of Wanda and Wanda's Sugar Shack throughout all these many years. Wanda's impact on Milford and it's surrounding communities will be fondly recalled for generations to come. She truly was the "sweetest" woman we've ever known. Her kindness and generosity is legendary, touching the hearts of all who met her. You, her fans and friends, literally span the globe and her thoughts were always of you and her family. Please take a moment to smile when you think of Wanda today, it was her greatest joy to bring a smile to every face that passed through her door and her life. We are all heartbroken but so thankful to be able to have her in our lives. We will keep you all posted as to Wanda's final arrangements and we are hoping to establish a fund to erect a permanent memorial in Wanda's memory as well as support her favorite charities. Thanks again for all of your love and support, be good and kind to one another, stay sweet Sugar Shackers , Wanda would've wanted it that way.
