The City of Milford and the Milford Police Department have received numerous complaints about bicycles, scooters and e-bikes in recent weeks. The City of Milford does have city ordinances for both scooters and bicycles and the State of Iowa has laws in place for them as well. You are not allowed to be on the sidewalks downtown or in city parks on these devices. You are required to operate them safely and to obey all traffic laws while operating them. In the areas of town that they can be operated on sidewalks, the operator must yield to pedestrians and vehicles. If the device does NOT have pedals, it is NOT considered an e-bike and is illegal to be operated other than on private property. Also, if the e-bike is more than 750W it is not considered a bicycle and can NOT be operated outside of public property.
We want everyone to have a safe and fun summer and hope parents look at the e-bikes and scooters their children have to assure they are legal and then discuss the rules/laws with their children.

Please use caution as this is new to everyone.

On Wednesday, our Department was proud to participate in the Power of Choice program — a powerful mock crash demonstration highlighting the very real consequences of distracted and impaired driving.

This impactful two-day event included a simulated crash scene, courtroom proceedings, and a funeral service for students, all designed to show how a single decision behind the wheel can affect countless lives.

While these scenarios were staged, the tragedies they represent are all too real and happen every day in communities across the country. One poor choice behind the wheel can change lives forever.

Thank you to everyone who helped organize and participate in this important event, and to the students who took the time to watch, listen, and learn. We hope this demonstration serves as a reminder to always drive sober, stay focused, wear your seatbelt, and make smart choices behind the wheel.

DO NOT TRAVEL in Dickinson County tonight. Some county roads have become impassible. Blizzard conditions with zero visibility will continue into the night. Visibility is so poor that we may not be able to reach you until conditions improve. If you do choose to travel, make sure you have a full tank of gas and a winter survival kit in your vehicle. If you become stranded, stay with your vehicle and be prepared to wait for an extended time before help can arrive.

The Milford Police Department to partner with Iowa Department of Revenue for To***co, Alternative Ni****ne and V***r Product Education and Enforcement.
The Milford Police Department has taken a pledge to keep to***co, alternative ni****ne and v***r products out of the hands of underage persons.
Known as I-PLEDGE, the program is a partnership with Iowa Department of Revenue to educate local retailers and to enforce Iowa’s to***co, alternative ni****ne and v***r product laws. Since the program’s inception in 2000, the statewide to***co compliance rate has grown to exceed 90 percent. By participating in the program, the Milford Police Department has committed to do its part to increase the compliance rate even more this year.
I-PLEDGE places emphasis on retailer training. Clerks who successfully complete an online training course, then pass an exam, will become I-PLEDGE-certified. This allows a retail establishment to use an affirmative defense against a civil penalty, if the certified clerk makes an illegal sale.
Officers will also be conducting compliance checks on local establishments as part of the I-PLEDGE program. Underage customers, under the supervision of law enforcement officials, will enter establishments and attempt to buy to***co, alternative ni****ne and v***r products. Clerks who make the illegal sale will be cited on the spot.
Criminal penalties for selling to***co, alternative ni****ne and v***r products to a minor include a $135 fine for a first offense, a $325 fine for a second offense, and a $645 fine for third, and subsequent, offenses. However, handing out citations is not the intent of the I-PLEDGE program.
