Dolly Parton’s legacy was never just about music—it was about compassion, courage, and choosing people over prejudice.

At a time when HIV/AIDS was met with fear, stigma, and cruel silence, Dolly used her platform to support AIDS awareness and fundraising efforts. In an industry—and a country—where standing publicly with LGBTQ+ people could carry real professional risk, she chose empathy.

She understood something too many powerful people did not: no one should be abandoned, shamed, or treated as disposable because of who they are or because they are sick.

Dolly spent a lifetime putting that belief into action—through generosity, advocacy, and an unwavering insistence that people deserve dignity. She showed that faith, country roots, and love for your neighbor are not excuses for exclusion; they are calls to care for one another.

She was always on the right side of history because she was on the side of people society tried to discard.

If you receive SNAP benefits and lost food due to Hurricane Lala, assistance may be available to replace your benefits.

SNAP participants who lost food because of extended power outages, flooding, or storm damage may request replacement benefits based on the value of the food that was lost.

⚠️ Important: You must submit a signed, written statement reporting your food loss within 10 days of the incident.

Please help us share this information with family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who may need assistance. We want to make sure our Central Oʻahu ʻohana know what resources are available as we continue recovering from Hurricane Lala.

Residents who use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program can be reimbursed for food purchased using their benefits that was lost during Hurricane Lala.

Following assessments of school campuses and surrounding community conditions, the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) will keep public schools and offices closed statewide on Monday, Aug. 17.

The additional closure will allow time to complete campus safety assessments, restore utilities where necessary and address storm-related impacts.

The Department will continue working with county and state partners and will provide updates regarding Tuesday's operations as additional information becomes available.

Previously announced extended closures on Hawai‘i Island for Nā‘ālehu Elementary and Ka‘ū High & Pāhala Elementary School remain in effect.
